BIz Notes 5th Edition Sept 2, 2015 TO: Faculty and Staff, School of Business A FUN Time was had by All ………… at the Alpha Kappa Psi ….. “Welcome and meet the Faculty” Party!!! Students and Faculty gathered on the south patio last week and enjoyed fun, food, fellowship and games. Some faculty were taught “balancing acts” by some accounting students. Some students lingered a while and got to know each other better …. Contemplating the future …. As they watched the markets slide on stock values. ALUMNI Shannon Curtin named to Academy of Scholars. Shannon and husband John visited our campus last week when Shannon was inducted into the HSU Academy of Scholars. The induction was a part of the CONVOCATION where the Charge to Excel was given to the freshman class by Outstanding Faculty Member Dr. Bradley Rowland. Shannon is group vice president and general merchandising manager for beauty and personal care at Walgreens, headquartered in Deerfield, IL. Curtin’s team is responsible for purchasing the beauty and personal care merchandise portfolio within Walgreens 8,229 store chain. She is also charged with developing the selling programs and educational curriculum for the 26,000+ store Beauty Advisors. Curtin's most recent work includes integrating the Boots beauty portfolio within the US marketplace, launching a new, award-winning consumer-facing magazine "Discover Beauty Within" exclusive to Walgreens, and introducing new sensory services within the walls of Walgreens beauty. Shannon spoke to students in the HSU freshman seminar class and students attending a reception in her honor. She will be joining the BAC and returning to campus sharing with students, successes about leadership. Curtin earned a B.A. in business management from Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, AR, in 1999 and was Miss Henderson in 1998. She is on the board of CEW, and a member of the Chicago Art Institute Auxiliary Board. In 2013, Beauty Inc. included Curtin within its “Top 40 under 40,” and MMR noted her as one of the “Most Influential Women in Retail” in both 2013 and 2014. Shannon was listed among the “50 Most Influential People in Beauty” by WWD Beauty Inc. 2014, Women Worth Watching 2014 receipt, by Diversity Magazine, and was recognized as Chicago's top 40 under 40 by Crain's Chicago Business. Curtin lives in Lincolnshire with husband John, and children, Amelia 2 years and Samuel 6 months. FACULTY SUCCESSES: Congratulations ROS!!!! Wow……… Dr. Roslyn Roberts. Ros just received the following mail: “Dear Roslyn, Congratulations! Your examiner reports are in (attached) all three examiners elected to award you your degree so no further revisions need to be undertaken. This is a tremendous achievement. Well done!” We are so happy for you ROS and know it’s been a long journey……one well deserved. Our big hearty Congratulations. Now you can “relax and go publishing!!” Congratulations Victor: Dr. Victor V. Claar is recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award representing the School of Business at Henderson State University. The award is for Creative or Scholarly Activity. Dr. Claar is Professor of Economics at Henderson and beginning his 7th year of teaching. Receiving his PhD from West Virginia University, Dr. Claar is active in scholarly work with publications in numerous major referred journals and has authored two books. STUDENT SUCCESSES: CONGRATULATIONS ABBY! A big congratulations to Abby Phillips (MBA 2014, BBA Acc 2013). Abby reports “It has been a YEAR since I passed the … CPA Exam and I can finally put the letters CPA after my name? I am beyond excited that my hard work has paid off.” We are so happy for you and proud of your accomplishments. MARKETING INTERN: Marketing student John Kennedy has accepted a marketing internship position at Oaklawn in Hot Springs for the fall semester. WEB PAGE DESIGNER: MBA Student Mallory Turner will be working with the Dean to maintain our electronic communications in the School of Business. Mallory will maintain the web-page, electronic monitors, and social media. Mallory will assist in this role until the newly hired secretary has an opportunity to adjust to their new job assignment and learn web-page management. Registration will begin soon for the Explore Majors Fair Tuesday, October 6, 2015 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Garrison Grand Ballroom The purpose of this event is to provide all students, but especially freshmen, sophomores, and undeclared students, the opportunity to access faculty, staff, and students from all academic departments in one location to assist in answering academic inquiries. The event allows students to be exposed to the variety of major options available at HSU so they can learn about specific requirements for majors, curriculum, and career options. Additionally, networking is made easier for students who are already decided and want to meet faculty and staff from their academic department and begin to build relationships. Also, they can meet students with similar interests which can lead to friendships and peers relationships. Student representatives, ambassadors, club members, etc. are highly encouraged to represent departments. ********** The Arkadelphia Chamber of Commerce is working with Start Up Junkie to host G 60 PITCH YOUR STARTUP in Arkadelphia on October 30.
