Semantic eScience Course Assignment 1 Linyun Fu 1. I read the article The best wine and food matches1 by David Williams. I decided to extend the wine/food ontology to incorporate the knowledge in this article. So I first added the six instances of wine under the Wine class with Protégé 4.1: - Jacob's Creek Sparkling Shiraz NV, Australia Clos Palet Vouvray, France 2009 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Riesling Kabinett, Mosel, Germany 2009 Waitrose Cream Sherry, Jerez, Spain Asda Extra Special New Zealand Pinot Noir 2009 La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial, Spain 2001 Since I am not a wine expert, I do not know how to further fit these instances into specific sub-classes of Wine, so I just put them directly under the Wine class. Next I tried to put the six instances of wine matching food into proper sub-classes of MealCourse: - Meaty curries goes to SpicyRedMeatCourse Vietnamese course and Thai course goes directly under MealCourse So does Sushi Vanilla desserts goes under DessertCourse Grilled salmon belongs to FishCourse Roast lamb is put into RedMeatCourse Then I use the hasDrink object property to connect these six pairs: - Meaty curries hasDrink Jacob's Creek Sparkling Shiraz NV, Australia Vietnamese course hasDrink Clos Palet Vouvray, France 2009; Thai course hasDrink Clos Palet Vouvray, France 2009 Sushi hasDrink Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Riesling Kabinett, Mosel, Germany 2009 Vanilla desserts hasDrink Waitrose Cream Sherry, Jerez, Spain Grilled salmon hasDrink Asda Extra Special New Zealand Pinot Noir 2009 Roast lamb hasDrink La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial, Spain 2001 This extension enables the ontology to answer questions about what wine goes with which meal course, but it still cannot answer questions such as “what kind of drink (dry or sweet, white or red) usually matches a certain kind of course?” due to lack of wine classification information. 2a. Question: What drink matches both Vietnamese course and Thai course? Answer: Clos Palet Vouvray, France 2009. 2b. Question: What drink goes with some kind of dessert course? Answer: Waitrose Cream Sherry, Jerez, Spain. 1 http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/sep/18/wine-and-food-matches
