N A V I G A T GRADE: 9 I O N 1 0 1 (2014-15) LESSON: 2 THEME: How To Succeed in High School and The PSAT LESSON GOALS: Familiarize students with the PSAT. Encourage students to sign up to take the PSAT. Provide students with hints on how to succeed at La Center High School. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What is the purpose/format of the PSAT? Why should I take the PSAT as a ninth grader? What steps can I take to begin high school on a strong note? MATERIALS NEEDED: Counselors (will meet as a large group in the commons) "How To Succeed at La Center High School" brochure Student and Parent/Guardian Signatures for brochure (due at next meeting) CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES: 1. "How To Succeed at La Center High School" Brochure. Distribute brochure. Read and discuss with students. Involve students in the discussion. For example, ask students to describe their study area at home, ask them how they keep track of assignments, find out who has already been on Skyward to check their grades. Ask students to take the brochure home to share with their parents. 2. Student and Parent/Guardian Signatures. Distribute the handout requiring that both students and their parents/guardians sign to indicate they have read the "How To Succeed at La Center High School" brochure. The signed slip is due at our next meeting. 3. Presentation by the Counseling Department. One of the counselors will explain the purpose and format of the PSAT and encourage students to sign up to take the exam. This activity involves all of the ninth graders meeting in one location.
