Department of Nursing Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Program Instructions for Admission Thank you for your interest in the CSU Sonoma State Nursing Program. We admit 24 students each fall semester APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEB 28th (postmarked) Read all instructions carefully. Incomplete applications or unmet criteria will render you ineligible for admission to the nursing program. Keep a copy of the application for your records. Transfer students must apply to the university by November 30. Then, apply to the Nursing department by February 28th. You will not be notified from the University admissions and Records until after admissions decisions have been finalized in the Nursing Department (late March). Second Bachelors students will need to apply to the Nursing department first by February 28th. Then, if you are admitted to the Nursing program, you will need to file a paper application with admissions and records in April. Do not apply to the University first, as the University is not accepting 2nd Bachelor students. You MUST meet the following minimum criteria TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ADMISSION to the PreLicensure baccalaureate-nursing program: 1. Admission to Sonoma State University by November 30th: If you are not currently a student at Sonoma State University and you do not hold a previous bachelor’s degree you must also apply to the University as a Nursing major (currently not an RN) by November 30 to be eligible to attend. Apply on-line at http://www.csumentor.edu/AdmissionApp/ using the Undergraduate Admission Application. You will be notified of admission to the university and the nursing program by the third week in April. If you are not admitted to the nursing program you will not be admitted to the university. 2. Completion of the following prerequisites: If you have not completed one or more of these prerequisites but anticipate completion prior to Fall, you are allowed to apply and your application will be considered. If you are admitted with any prerequisites outstanding you must provide transcript verification of outstanding prerequisite course completion before you will be permitted to begin the program. Completion of the above prerequisites with a grade of B or better 4. A maximum of 1 science and 1 non science pre-requisite course may be “in Progress” by February 28th 5. Overall Grade Point Average of 3.0 in all college-level coursework 6. Certified Nurse Assistant Certification (or one-page plan for completion if admitted to program) 7. Completion of the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) version 5 with an adjusted individual total score, ranking listed in the table below 8. If you have a previous bachelors degree in any field, you are not required to repeat English composition, oral communication and critical thinking courses. Admission to the Nursing Program is based on a 100-point system. The breakdown of point distribution is listed in the table below. Local service area is considered to be Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties. Choose only 2 questions; submit only one doublespaced typewritten page (no smaller than 12 font!) per question (total 2 pages). Submit these two pages with your application. Please write your name in the upper right hand corner of each page. 1. What critical thinking skills do you possess that will assist you in your nursing career? 2. How do you propose to face the challenges of today’s nursing workplace? 3. As nursing is the most trusted profession in the eyes of the public, how would you maintain that trust in your practice? 4. In reviewing the Department of Nursing Philosophy and the nine concepts, which concept resonates with your abilities to practice as a nurse? (refer to Student Handbook, Pg 6&7) 5. Describe a stressful or challenging situation you have experienced and how you dealt with it. Looking back, would you do anything differently? Please explain. 6. What experiences have prepared you to work with diverse populations seeking healthcare? Admission Decisions - We make every attempt to get admissions decisions completed in April. All admission notifications will be sent via email. University transfer students will be notified of their university admission status after the Nursing department notifies all admits. Admission decisions are sealed and not open for review. A valid SSN is required by the CA Board of Registered Nursing to apply for licensure. While the Department of Nursing does not require this, you must have an SSN before taking your licensing exam.
