EXT. MIAMI BEACH LINCOLN ROAD MALL BOOKS AND BOOKS

AFTERNOON
A 23-year old attractive Latina, Johanna, sits at an outdoors
table looking at a menu, while thumbing hurriedly through a
Magazine. She calls over the Waiter off camera, who we cannot
see.
JOHANNA
I’ll have the Ultimate Pan con Lechon Sandwich, it’s
my favorite and I’m starving. And also a medium Diet
Pepsi. Thanks. (The waiter writes down the order,
then turns and walks away.)
Hola, Como Estas? You’ve heard of a “Runaway Bride”,
right? But have ever heard of a Runaway Honeymooner?
Well, I’m Johanna Cruz. And I am a Runaway
Honeymooner. Maybe if you had seen my face at the
Altar on yesterday, it would have been a dead giveaway
of what was to come.
We see an altar shot of a pensive Johanna with a forlorn look on
her face, as she stands next to the Groom who we only see a rear
silhouette of. The camera turns to her mother looking at her
with an expression as to say she knows something is wrong with
Johanna.
You may be asking why? True love, it’s all because of
true love. If someone had told me yesterday I’d be
here, I wouldn’t have believed it. I thought I’d
still be on my Fairy Tale Honeymoon, after my Fairy
Tale Wedding. NOT!! Gracias, Mr. True Love.
Instead I find myself back in the City I love, Miami.
Some call it “The Latin Capital of the Americas.” Yes
I agree, but I just call it Home. Miami is very
different from any other City in the United States.
Why do I say that? No, it’s not because of all the
Gold Digging done here in the City. And there is
plenty of that going on too!

We see two very Beautiful Girls and a Handsome Guy, taking
Selfies with Rolls of Money for posting on Instagram.
Hmmm, I wonder if it’s too late for me to change my
profession.
We see footage of a crowd of people walking in downtown Miami,
and pans to the downtown skyline on a beautiful spring day.
Then we see kids playing soccer on a green field.
It is the Diversity of Miami, the People and their
Cultures, the beautiful Weather, the modern
Architecture, the passionate Romance, the competitive
Sports, and the shady Politics. All this makes it a
Caliente’ Melting Pot! So very HOT!
Each of these Miami Landmarks is shown in stunning moving
footage, as she speaks.
Whether its Lincoln Road Mall right here on South
Beach, which has a Starbucks literally on every
corner; Miracle Mile in Coral Gables where there are
the most wonderful Bridal Shops, and there is this
very cool huge outdoors Fire Pit; or the Cuban food of
Little Havana, there you can get the best Croquetas;
even the Historic Black Community of Overtown, where
Jackson Soul Food is a must visit; or the Brickell
Business District in Downtown Miami, with its gleaming
buildings; believe me it’s all wonderful!
The Waiter walks over and sets down a Diet Pepsi on the table.
Johanna thanks him.
I am a very proud Second Generation American Latina.
My Mother Sonja is a Puerto Rican Seamstress, and my
Father Luis is Dominican and owns a Gardening
Business. They both came individually to Miami to
chase their own particular Dreams.

We see an altar shot of a Johanna’s mother as a younger Sonja
with joy on her face, as she stands next to the Groom who we
only see a rear silhouette of. The camera turns to her mother
with an expression on her face which says she knows this
marriage will last forever.
After moving here, they met, fell in Love, and
married. Afterward my older brother Jorge, excuse me
George, and I were born. Now they are doing
everything they can to make sure we each reach our own
dreams!
Wow! They’re amazing things dreams. Well, that’s how
Miami got its start in the late 19th Century. It took
a special Brand of Dreamers to see beyond the Swamps,
Mangroves, and Mosquitos and build a gleaming city on
the ocean.
As a matter of fact the first Dreamer was a Woman,
Julia Tuttle. Her vision became the Miami we see and
know today, and I so totally relate to that! It was
then when Miami gained the moniker which sticks today,
“Magic City.”
And for me it has always been truly
magic!
The Waiter delivers the Ultimate Pan con Lechon Sandwich to the
table. Johanna thanks him once again.
For my Quinceanera I became a real life teenaged
Princess!
We see an Quinceanera shot of an excited Johanna with a joyful
look on her face, as she stands next to the her father who we
only see a rear silhouette of before he asks her to dance. The
camera turns to her mother looking at her with tears, as if to
say she knows her baby girl has grown-up.
It was then when I declared that I would marry my very
own Prince, one day, and live happily ever.

Well that day came and went yesterday. And my Prince
could have been selected from Casting Central. He is
Ramon Cortez, a Spanish Professional Soccer Player.
And he is hot!
The camera switches briefly to a close up shot of a Male’s
Athletic Body all Sweaty and Shiny: his Arms, Chest and Abs.
We first met when he was on a vacation in Miami. After
our initial meeting he returned several times sweeping
me right off my feet, proposing and then taking me to
the Altar.
The camera switches briefly to footage of Ramon with his shirt
off picking up Johanna, looking into her eyes and asking “So,
will you marry me?”
And then we had our Fairy Tale wedding. I think, no I
know, my Parents wanted me to marry Ramon more than I
did.
When I met Ramon, they were ecstatic! Especially my
Dad, as he loves Professional Soccer. After he saw
Ramon for the first time I remember his saying to me,
(In her father’s Spanish accent) “Mija, be very
flattered. Here is someone who can buy the whole Herd,
and all the Leche he wants.” So
Instead of rebelling I went against my heart and
married Ramon to make my parents happy and save face,
all while trying to forget Mr. True Love.
Yesterday was all a blur!
Johanna sits with a glazed over stare on her face, just as she
had on yesterday. There are all the sounds of the Paparazzi
calling both Ramon’s and Johanna’s names, along with names of
the Celebrities in attendance. We then here all the Camera

Clicks from the entire picture taking scene, flooding the spaces
in between the shouting of names.
It wasn’t until I woke up in the middle of the first
night on my Honeymoon I realized what I had done. So
what did I do? I quietly stole out of bed, packed my
things and left Ramon sleeping soundly. Alavao!
Hopefully he wasn’t dreaming of me right then and
there, because this situation is about to become a
real Nightmare.
The camera switches to Johanna tipping out of the bedroom, and
then running down the hall while still dressing.
Why? All because I longed for Mr. True Love: Tyson
Williams. And I didn’t even invite him to the wedding
for fear of not being able to say “I Do,” if he was
anywhere near there!
Johanna motions for the Waiter to bring her the check.
and begins to gather her things to leave the table.
Stands
So now I’m trying to get up the courage to go and tell
my Parents what I’ve done. And when I am nervous, I
anxiously read a lot and eat a lot of Pan con Lechon.
Do I look fat to you? Well, I may get bigger than
Miami before this is over!
So now I’m off to the Hialeah Neighborhood where I
grew up, to unexpectedly ring my parent’s doorbell and
say “Surprise! I’m back!” So wish me luck. Ciao!

ACT ONE
INT. HIALEAH HOME OF PARENTS LUIS AND SONJA CRUZ – AFTERNOON
We hear Bachata music playing in the background, before we see
46 year old Luis and 44 year old Sonja Cruz in the den of their
home. Luis is sitting on the sofa thumbing through a brochure.
Sonja is standing and doing some of her best sexy moves.
LUIS
Mi Amor, can you believe it? We finally have an empty
nest. You and I can really let our hair down together
now! We can get that 50-inch flat screen HDTV I’ve
been wanting for our bedroom. (He puts down the
brochure moving off the sofa, stands pulling her up
and embraces Sonja as they begin to move together to
the music.) Let’s cuddle up together in bed and watch
all the movies we love and we’ve missed, without any
interruptions! (They kiss tenderly and he turns her,
as they dance romantically)
SONJA
Didn’t Johanna look very beautiful and all so happy at
the wedding yesterday? She and Ramon were a real life
Prince and Princess on their special day. They make
the perfect Latin couple, and soon will have the
perfect Latin little ones for us to love and dote on.
LUIS
Yes, she did. I am so proud of her. And just think
we now have a professional soccer star in our very own
family! Ramon clearly loves and adores her. She
definitely couldn’t have done any better!
Remember when I first saw you come out of the mansion,

You had your sewing kit and dress patterns in your
arms, and I just stared. You were so beautiful, I was
speechless.
SONJA
Yes, I do remember. And I’m so very glad you realized
that I was human, and spoke to me the next time I saw
you. Who would have ever thought that all those lawns
you’ve groomed and the beautiful dresses I’ve made
would have ultimately paid off, for us and our family?
Hey, this is the United States and it is Miami!
LUIS
So Mi Amor, what do you want our beautiful
grandchildren to call you?
SONJA
I want my grandchildren to have the lives we could
never have dreamed of in this wonderful Country of
ours. And truly live out any dreams their little
hearts can imagine. They can call me Abuela and
Grandmother. As I will do everything possible to
love, nurture and help to take care of them.
And if they see you holding me this close Mi Amor, as
teens, they will also call us Matrimonio Caliente! Hot
& Married. (Luis just laughs and then dips her) So
what do you want them to call you?
LUIS
As a traditional Latino and proud Dominican, they must
call me Abuelo! Abuelo Luis. That has a nice ring to

Luis you know every child is different. Jorge has a
good heart, but just struggles with his ability to
work things all out. Please don’t be so hard on him.

LUIS
He is the first born, Mi Mijo. I have to be hard on
him so he can become the man he needs to be. (We hear
the doorbell ring). I wonder who that could be. We
aren’t expecting anyone, are we Mi Amor? (Luis and
Sonja part, we still hear the music in the background
as she shakes her head from side to side and he walks
towards the front door)

Luis approaches and opens the front door.
LUIS
Jorge.
Mijo.
Hablando Del Diablo.

JORGE
What did you just call me Papi? The Devil? (As
he extends his hand walking through the door past
his Father and shaking his head in the negative)
LUIS
Your Mami and I were just talking about you and
your Sister. Como Estas?
JORGE
I’m okay. Have you and Mami recovered from
yesterday yet?
LUIS
Well, yes and no. We are still celebrating the
beautiful wedding and also having an empty nest.
You are not coming by to ask to move back in are
you?
JORGE
No Dad, I just came by to check on you both.
he enters the Den) Hi Mami! (He hugs her
tenderly and sits next to her on the Sofa)

I told Jorge we are celebrating both the wedding
and finally having an empty nest. Once Chico and
Chica move out, there is no coming back!
JORGE
Yeah Papi, I know. You’ve told us both enough
times. Didn’t Johanna make a beautiful Bride?
She always wanted to be a Fairy Tale Princess.
Ramon and Johanna were the model wedding couple.
Well she actually made it, didn’t she?
SONJA
Yes she did. Your Papi and I were just saying
how proud she has made us. You also looked so
handsome in your tuxedo. We only want the very
best for both of you.
LUIS
Well, I’m just glad Ramon bought the Cow.
JORGE
And yes Papi, he definitely bought the Cow. (As
he just shakes his head)
LUIS
Mijo, why can’t you be more like your Sister?
JORGE
More like my Sister? And marry a male
professional soccer star? (As he slyly smiles)

You know what I mean, get your Life together,
settle down get a real job, get married, and give
us some grandchildren!
SONJA
Luis, please don’t start in on him today of all
days.
JORGE
Whether you like it or not, being a Professional
Singer is a real job! And I don’t fully control
when I will meet Ms. Right. But when I do,
you’ll be the first to know. All of us can’t
become Gardeners like you Papi!
LUIS
Don’t get smart with me young man! Your mother
and I are tired of you struggling to make ends
meet. We want more for you.
JORGE
How about letting me want more for myself?
With that question asked, Luis doesn’t answer and storms out of
the room silently. Jorge just looks over at his mother.
SONJA
Mijo, don’t be angry with your Dad. He loves you
so much, and really wants the best for you. He
just gets all frustrated and doesn’t know how to
show his love over that frustration.
You know I love you too. But you also know I
understand you more than he does. You are and
will always be my first born. Life isn’t

perfect, but we must make our way through it and
find happiness where we can. It is too short not

JORGE
Mami, Papi doesn’t ever give me a break. He acts
like I’m a homeless person living on the street!
I want to make both of you proud of me. But he
has to learn to give it a rest sometimes.
SONJA
I’ll speak with your father. Go ahead and live
your life to the very fullest. Only Dios Mi
should and will judge you.
Jorge and Sonja both stand up and hug each other tightly.
JORGE
Thanks, Mami. I love you. I’ve got to meet some
friends. So I’m going to go now. Tell Papi
goodbye.
SONJA
Okay Mijo.
Be careful.
I love you too.
Jorge leaves the den and heads to the front door and exits
shutting the door behind him. Sonja sits back down on the sofa
and picks up the HDTV brochure thumbing through it. Luis comes
out of the bedroom.
LUIS
That is your son, not mine! Why can’t he just
get it together? When I was his age, I was
already married with two children. He has got to
become more responsible.

Luis, those were different times. Today, it’s
very hard for young people. They come out of
College saddled with huge loans, and then can’t
find a good job.
No wonder they put off major decisions in life,
like marriage and having a family. They had big
dreams growing up, but have had to now put them
on hold.
Luis and Sonja have sat down to a nicely prepared late lunch, at
the kitchen table of their home. The doorbell rings again.
LUIS
Who is it now? Why can’t we just enjoy a quiet
lunch together, Mi Amor?
Luis returns to the door and opens it wide, as he begins to
speak.
LUIS
Hola, how may I help you? (Focusing, he can’t
believe his eyes) Johanna, where’s Ramon?
Johanna
Hello to you too Papi!
She kisses him on the cheek and walks right past shaking her
head, then entering into the kitchen as her father follows.
Sonja
Hola Mi Amor.

Johanna

Johanna sits at the kitchen table, while her mom and dad then

you’ve married him. That just doesn’t happen!

will pass. And it’s morally wrong.
Johanna
I wish that was what it is. It’s much deeper
than that. I only married Ramon, because both of
you said it was the right thing to do. Did I

forever after love. And that is what I have
always wanted.
Sonja

can’t believe what he’s hearing.
Sonja
Luis, I’m just trying to explain the marital
facts of life to our young daughter. Some things
take time.
Luis

will not embarrass us or humiliate Ramon. You
will stay married to him and make yourself happy!
Both of you will have beautiful children and
build a wonderful lifelong marriage together,
just like your mother and I have done.
Johanna

Papi it doesn’t really matter, because I’m not

any more about all this foolishness.
Sonja
Luis, giving her an ultimatum right now isn’t
helping. Let’s just all think about this.
Johanna
You and Papi both may need some time to think
about my decision. I’ve got some place to be.
We can discuss it some more when I’ve returned.

Luis
So where are you going, to meet Tyson? I knew
it! No, you are not going anywhere. You are
going to stay right here, while we both talk some

She stands up from the kitchen table looking at her father, and
turns to her mother who is still seated.

Mami, I am going to join my friends for dinner at
Zuma Restaurant in the Brickell District. You
know when I am nervous I eat a whole lot of Pan
con Lechon (as she smiles slyly). I’ll be back.
Sonja
Okay, Mija.
Please be careful.
Luis
This is not over young lady!
And I mean it!
She kisses her mother on the cheek, and just walks past her
father staring coldly at him as she heads for the door.
Luis
Can you believe this? What is she thinking? How
could she do this to Ramon? He is a good man.
And she doesn’t even recognize it. How can she
do this to us?
Sonja
Luis, she is in love and it is not with Ramon.
She tried to do what we wanted her to do, but
then realized she just can’t. While I don’t
agree with what she has done, I can understand
it. Now the question is where do we go on from
here?
Luis
That’s easy, she goes back to him!

I wish it were that easy. You know how stubborn
your daughter can be. We must not try to dictate
to her what she should do. If she comes to that
decision on her own, it would be much better.
Luis
Maybe you are right. But she’s going back to
Tyson. That’s not what we want for her.
Sonja
She has got to see for herself, that’s not what
she really wants either. So we’ll give her a
little time and space to find that out. We know
Tyson and his Family of Class Snobs, and it
definitely will end up in nothing but heart
break.
Luis
I sure hope you’re right and what about poor
Ramon?
Sonja
We’ll just see how much he truly loves Johanna,
and what he’s willing to do to keep her.
She gets up from the sofa and walks over to him as he stands,
they hug each other.
Sonja
Do you remember when you first met my father?
didn’t like you very much. Did he?
Luis
No, he didn’t. He thought a Gardner wouldn’t
provide a very good life for his Little Nina.

my side of thinking. We’ve got to let Johanna
work all this out for herself. Hopefully, she
will end up exactly where we think she should be
happy with Ramon. This is life, Mi Amor

LUIS
Now what was all that, about you not feeling the
Magic with me at first?
Sonja just looks at Luis with raised eyebrows and a smile.

EXT. JOHANNA’S CAR IN ROUTE TO BRICKELL DISTRICT – AFTERNOON
Johanna drives into downtown Miami to meet her racially,
ethnically, and culturally diverse, close friends for their
standing weekly dinner in the Brickell District. She pulls out
her cell phone and speed dials a number.
Johanna
Ashley, hey it’s me.
Ashley
And why are you calling me from your Honeymoon?
Johanna
It’s because I’m in Miami and not on my Honeymoon
anymore.
Ashley
What do you mean anymore?
Johanna
You heard me right.
I’ve left Ramon.
Ashley
You’ve left Ramon.
Honeymoon?
Who does that on their
Johanna
Me, I guess. Just listen. I’m on my way to Zuma
to surprise the Gang, and let them know I’m back.
But I need my Maid of Honor’s help before I make
my grand reappearance.

INT. HIALEAH HOME OF PARENTS LUIS AND SONJA CRUZ – EVENING
Luis and Sonja sit in their den watching yesterday’s prerecorded airing of Univision’s Sabado Gigante hosted by Don
Francisco, on their DVR. The telephone rings. Luis hits the
pause button on the TV remote control and answers the phone.
Luis
Hello.
Ramon
Mr. Cruz, its Ramon.
Luis
Ramon, how are you?
Ramon
I’m not doing so well. I’ve got some bad news to
tell you. Please just listen.
Luis
Okay, but… (Ramon interrupts him)
Ramon
This is hard enough. Please just listen. This
morning when I woke up, Johanna was gone. I
thought she may have gone down for some breakfast
or for a walk in the gardens. So I got up, got
dressed and went down to look for her. She wasn’t
in the restaurant or the gardens.

Upon returning to the room, I checked the closet
and all her clothes were gone. I looked in the
bathroom, and all her toiletries were gone. I
just don’t understand. Where could she have
gone? I’m so sorry to have to call you and Mrs.
Cruz with this disturbing news. And I just don’t
know what to think or do.
Luis
Before you go on any further, Johanna is here.
She came back home this afternoon. Now I know
all this is upsetting.
Ramon
She’s back at home? What did she say?

I think it’s best if you talk with her about it
all. She isn’t here right now. Do you want me

Ramon

Yes, that was him. He was calling to tell us
Johanna was missing. He didn’t have a clue as to
what happened. And was shocked to hear she was
back. I told him she wasn’t here. He asked me
not to tell Johanna he called. He said he had a
better idea, without saying what it was.
Sonja
Well if I know Ramon, I’ll tell you what it is.
He is preparing to fight for his love and
marriage. So Luis, we just need to sit back and
let all this unfold right before us. And by our
doing so this will all work out one way or the
other.
Luis

Johanna parks and strategically positions herself, across from
the entrance of the restaurant. As she stands watching, Tyson
approaches the door of the restaurant walking hand in hand with
an attractive young lady. He opens the door for them both and
they enter. Ashley shortly comes out of the same door.

Johanna, I’ve got some bad news.
Johanna
Yeah, I know. I saw them enter the restaurant
together. So who’s the new girl?
Ashley
I don’t know. She’s news to me, this is the
first time any of us have seen or met her. Are
you sure you still want to do this tonight?
Johanna
I’m even more certain I want to do this.

Ashley returns back into the restaurant. Shortly, she comes back
out through the door with Tyson following her into the
courtyard. Johanna steps from behind a trellis and in view of
Tyson and Ashley.

Ashley turns and walks back into the restaurant.

She starts to get all teary eyed as he talks.

just walked away from my Honeymoon all for you.
Tyson

Look it’s over between us. So go on back to
Ramon play the dutiful Princess, and make it
work. You made your choice, and it wasn’t me!
He turns and walks away leaving her crying inconsolably, as he
reenters the restaurant door. She walks to her car still
crying, enters it and drives away.
INT. HIALEAH HOME OF PARENTS LUIS AND SONJA CRUZ – EVENING
The front door opens then slams and in comes Johanna who says
nothing, going straight back to her bedroom. Luis and Sonja
look at each other, without saying a word.

INT. ZUMA RESTAURANT IN THE BRICKELL DISTRICT – EVENING
Tyson rejoins the group next to his date at the large table.
Ashley looks back at the restaurant entrance, then turns and
looks at Tyson.
Tyson
Thanks a lot Ashley. You guys won’t believe what
just happened. Johanna is out there (as he leans
his head towards the door).
Now everyone almost turns in unison and looks at the entrance of
the restaurant.
Ashley
So where is she Tyson?
What happened?
Tyson
I left her outside.
Ashley gets up from the table and heads towards the front door
of the restaurant.
Johnny
Yo Tyson, are you serious?
“Runaway Bride?”
Johanna has become a

Johnny, you all were at her wedding. Remember, I

play in words. Ashley returns.

her leave as she is not outside anywhere. So

Tyson

Raj
Of course Tyson, there’s always universal truth.

know is she just can’t come back here and think
we are going to pick up where we left off. She
ended it months ago.

He grabs the hand of the beautiful young lady sitting silently
to his right, and kisses the back of it.

Later that night, Luis and Sonja sit comfortably cuddling on the
sofa as they continue to watch TV. Johanna hasn’t come out of
the bedroom since her return from downtown Miami. The doorbell
rings. Luis gets up from the sofa and heads back to the front
door. As he opens the door, he sees whose standing there.

Sonja and I have been kind of expecting to see
you. And I for one am glad you’re here.
Overhearing her husband’s and son-in-law’s conversation from the
Den, Sonja makes her way into the foyer.
Ramon
Thanks Mr. Cruz.

Oh, hello Mrs. Cruz (He hugs

Hello Ramon, trouble in paradise huh?
Ramon
I guess you could say that.
Where is Johanna?
Luis
She’s in her room.

Would you like me to call

Luis
Johanna, there is someone here to see you.
She walks out of the bedroom and down the hallway, entering the
foyer she comes face to face with her new husband. She stands
between her mother and father facing Ramon. They just stare at
each other without saying a word, as Luis and Sonja quietly walk
away.
