OCTOBER 2014 NEWSLETTER
We are already nearly half way through the Autumn Term and would like to remind parents that next
week….Monday 27th October to Friday 31st October is the Autumn half-term. School will resume on
Monday 3rd November.
NEW MEMBERS OF STAFF
We would like to welcome and introduce our new members of staff.
Katie Hallinan is from Ireland and has joined us as the Reception A teacher. Miss Katie has an English
and History B.A. Honours degree from Cork University, an M.S.C in Architectural Conservation from
Edinburgh University, as well as a P.G.C.E. She has worked in both Ireland and Spain. Miss Katie is really
enjoying teaching the Reception children and loving the Spanish weather.
Nathalie Phillips is from Liverpool and has a B.A. Honours degree in Spanish and Communications
Studies. Miss Phillips is the special Spanish and English teacher giving classes to children with low
Spanish and English throughout the school. She will also be working as an assistant helping teachers in
all year groups. Although she has just come to Madrid from Liverpool she spent her Erasmus Year while
at university in Madrid, so is familiar with Spain.
Rosanna Harries is from South West England and studied Psychology at Southampton University. She
has also trained as a Mathematics teacher in Bristol, where she attained her P.G.C.E. Miss Rosanna is
working as a team teacher for Key Stage 2 as well as supporting Mrs Bazakis at the Sports centre. Miss
Rosanna is also doing the PAT (Phonical Awareness Training) with groups of children in KS2. The PAT
programme teaches children to read, spell and write phonically regular single syllable words by making
analogies and is a useful teaching aid.
Nicholas Burr has joined the teaching staff working as an assistant to the two Year 1 groups. While still
at university Mr Burr worked as playground assistant at Numont during the university holidays and his
year off. He attended the University of Bedford for 3 years doing “Childhood and Youth Studies”. He is
himself a former Numont student who attended Numont from the age of 2 until 11 years.
Lauren Richards is from Wolverhampton in England. Miss Lauren has a degree from the University of
Manchester in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. She is working as the Nursery 1
assistant to Mrs Majella.
Olivia McArdle is from the east coast of Ireland and is the Reception A assistant. Miss Olivia has a
background in Graphic and Textile design which she still enjoys in her free time, and uses with the
Reception children. Miss Olivia has spent many years teaching children arts, crafts and music.
Residential visit to Cañada Real
Years 5 & 6 went to Cañada Real from Monday 29th September until Wednesday 1st October. They
were accompanied by their class teachers, Miss Smith, Mrs Kennedy and Miss Karen. The monitors at
Cañada Real organized many educational and fun activities, including soap and candle making,
decorating plant pots, planting vegetables, archery, map reading, nature workshops looking at animal
footprints and bones, and they also enjoyed a barbecue and a disco.
It is a great experience for the children and many thanks to the teachers for giving up their time.
CHARITY APPEALS
The collection of old toys was very successful. The British Ladies Association will be selling them at their
Christmas Bazaar and all monies raised will go to various charities. Many thanks to all the parents who
donated toys. As always the response from Numont School families was marvellous. The Bazaar will take
place Sunday, 24th November 2013 between 12 noon and 6 pm at Mauricio Legendre 16 (between Plaza
de Castilla and Chamartin Station). Parking available. The entrance fee is 3€ for adults and 1€for children
between the ages of 3 and 10 years old.
There will be a Jumble sale held at St George’s Church (C/Nuñez de Balboa 43) on Saturday 25 th October
from 11.00 to 14.00pm. The “jumble” for sale includes second-hand books, clothes and accessories at
very low prices.
In November we will be sending out our annual request for donations of food (dry food, such as rice,
pasta, tins, etc), and men’s clothing. All these donations go directly to the “Albergue Santa Maria” which
is a centre for homeless men in Sanchinarro. The centre provides food, clothing and a bed for nearly 150
homeless men and also gives classes and workshops where the men can learn new skills which help
them become more integrated into society. All donations may be brought into the office.
NUMONT BOOK CLUB
The Numont Book Club takes place every term. It is a
great way for parents and children to buy Englishbooks at great prices. Also by ordering through the
Numont Book Club website http://eu-schools.scholastic.co.uk/numont-school by the deadline
parents can save the cost of delivery as all the books are delivered free of charge to the school.

Parents are welcome to come and attend their child’s assembly. Assemblies usually last about 30 minutes and the
Christmas Assemblies are great fun. The children and teachers work very hard to produce an entertaining show and
it is a great opportunity to see your child perform.
PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS
The termly parent teacher meetings will take place on the 7th November (FS & KS1) and the 14th
November (KS2).
The lists are normally posted outside the classrooms the Wednesday before. Parents can sign
up their names next to a time. The meetings normally start around 14.00pm and the last
appointment is at 17.50pm. Meetings last 10 minutes and must be strictly adhered to. If any
parent would like more than 10 minutes please contact the office to arrange an alternate
meeting.
BAKE SALE
The Bake Sale will also take place on the 7th November throughout the day. We hold a Bake
Sale every term in order to raise money for various charities that the school supports. Parents
and children may bring in cakes and cookies and also savoury goods. The children may bring a
maximum of 5€ each to spend on the goodies!
USBORNE BOOKS
Mrs.Gill in year 1A has started to distribute Usborne books in Madrid. Usborne books are
trusted by teachers and education professionals everywhere for their impeccable quality, and
are guaranteed to engage, educate and entertain children of all ages. We have ordered
curriculum linked books for the library for year 1 to year 6 and we have received free books for
Nursery and Reception for the classrooms.
HALLOWEEN PARTY
On Friday 24th October we are having a Halloween Party. Children may come to school
on that day dressed in fancy costumes and bring a treat to share with their friends.
Classes will take place as normal.
