US Lacrosse Boys All-Academic Selection Process for Virginia-Hampton Roads (2015)
US Lacrosse (USL) is the organization that recognizes and provides high school certification for
All- Academic. USL determines the number of public High School boys All-Academic
recipients using a “one for ten” criterion of eligible HS programs. For the Hampton Roads area,
the number of recipients for 2015 is based on 17 eligible public HS teams, and results in our area
being accorded one (1) All-Academic. The process is summarized below.
ALL-ACADEMIC PROCESS
All-Academic Candidates are taken from nominations of their respective coaches or any other
coach who is a current member of the HRLax League. All-Academic nominations must be
submitted on the Hampton Roads Boys High School All-Academic Nomination Forms.
A properly prepared nomination packet requires the cooperation of the candidate’s coach and the
candidate’s guidance counselor or the school principal. It is due no later than May 22.
Selection is performed by a committee comprised of high school guidance counselors and admissions
officers of nearby universities. The chair of the All-Academic process is Jim Old. Please direct any
questions about the All-Academic process to him at: norfolklax@yahoo.com

All-Academic honors are determined purely by academic performance. A candidate’s
field performance is NOT considered in this selection process. (Coaches are to pre-screen
by only nominating those players they deem to be significant contributors to the team.)
At least 50% of the candidate’s courses should be AP, IB, Honors, or other college prep
courses.
Grades applied to the process begin with the candidate’s freshman (9th grade) year and
extend to the mid-point of the candidate’s senior year.
The Candidate must exhibit good sportsmanship on the field
Candidates should have left their mark beyond the lacrosse field and the classroom by
making significant contributions of service to the school and/or community
The candidate must be a player who represents their school and the game of lacrosse with
integrity and character. This representation should consider both on and off field conduct
and will be confirmed by a written statement from the candidate’s principal or guidance
counselor.
Important note: US Lacrosse does not orchestrate the All Academic Selection
process for each region, but works collaboratively with Hampton Roads Area
Chairman and committee to recognize the honorees for All-Academic.
Per US Lacrosse guidelines, ANY PLAYER EARNING BOTH ALL-AMERICAN AND
ALL-ACADEMIC STATUS WILL NEED TO CHOOSE WHICH DESIGNATION THEY
PREFER. Coaches with players who are candidates for both awards will be contacted prior to
award announcement in order for them to discuss with the player which award they prefer.
A player can NOT earn both All-Academic and All-American Status in the same year.
Finally, for the players selected for All-American or All-Academic, two certificates from US
Lacrosse will be provided. One is for the player to keep and the other is for the school he
represented. No certificates will be distributed at the meeting. After the winners are determined,
the US Lacrosse Area Rep will print the certificates and mail a copy to the player and a copy to
the school. No exceptions to this will be allowed.
