DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT SERVICES For Reference Only CLASS CODE: 5988 PAY GRADE: 017 CLASS TITLE: STAFF INTERPRETER/TRANSLATOR ALLOCATION FACTOR(S) This is work assisting with communication needs of agency staff and hearing impaired and deaf individuals by providing professional interpreter services; or translating oral and/or written communications between English and a designated second language or languages; or translating written materials for visually impaired individuals through Braille. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: (Note: The examples of work as listed in this class specification are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of specific statements does not preclude management from assigning specific duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. Provides interpreter services for deaf individuals during interviews for employment, testing, medical, psychological, psychiatric evaluation and/or treatment services. Provides interpreter service assistance to agency staff on matters relating to communication needs of deaf individuals, their family members, deaf groups or organizations. Assists clients in preparation and completion of forms. Assists deaf individuals in accessing services available through other resources. Provides communication services to assist agency staff in management and coordination of services to deaf and other hearing impaired individuals, or to the visually impaired. Develops and conducts manual communication training and workshop sessions for agency staff and resources. Develops interpreter resources in the community and maintains list of qualified interpreters. Maintains TDD (telephone device for the deaf) communication with deaf individuals regarding the scheduling and coordination of appointments and services. Uses manual communication techniques such as American Sign Language (AMESLAM), sign language and finger spelling. Operates adaptive technology to translate tests, text or other reading material into Braille or large print. Provides simultaneous or consecutive translation for clients, customers or parties. Translates orally or in writing all documents presented by clients, customers or parties. Creates, prepares and maintains necessary reports and forms. 5988-STAFF INTERPRETER_TRANSLATOR-CS Provides translations of correspondence, memorandums, reports and other documents from one language into another. Schedules and arranges all interpreter assignments within the office. Assists with preparing and updating the translation of agency forms. Trains interpreters and translators to meet agency standards. Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (Note: The knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) identified in this class specification represent those needed to perform the duties of this class. Additional knowledge, skills and abilities may be applicable for individual positions in the employing agency.) Knowledge of methods of compiling, organizing and analyzing data. Knowledge of Braille, American Sign Language (AMESLAM) and manually coded English (PSE) or of a designated second language(s). Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective verbal and written communication in the English language. Knowledge of correct spelling, punctuation and grammar usage in English. Ability to use manual communication techniques such as AMESLAM, manually coded English (PSE), and finger spelling, both receptively and expressively; or to communicate in a designated second language(s) or using Braille. Ability to interpret spoken material, including medical information, into sign language or to verbally translate spoken material from English into a designated second language(s). Ability to transliterate Braille or sign language or to translate a designated second language(s) into English or into Braille. Ability to instruct others in basic sign language, Braille or in a designated second language(s). Ability to meet the communication needs of hearing impaired individuals or the communication needs of individuals conversing in a designated second language(s). Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A high school diploma or its equivalent and any level credential in sign language interpreting from a state governmental entity, a state organization of sign language interpreters (e.g., Florida Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf [FRID]) or a nationally recognized organization (e.g., Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf [RID], National Association of the Deaf [NAD]); or A high school diploma or its equivalent and Court Interpreter Certification issued by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts; or A high school diploma and three years experience in translation and interpretation of English and a required second language or Braille; or A bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited college or university in a designated second language.
