Jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has recorded and performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990’s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. His performances convey a wide range of expression as he explores the world of jazz standards, contemporary tunes and inventive rock covers. For the past ten years The Bad Plus have broken down the walls of conventional jazz and created an uncompromising body of work. While the bulk of their output has been original music, they have deconstructed songs in the pop, rock as well as the country and classical music idioms. This evening of jazz matches these two innovative trios together for an incredible evening of genre-bending piano tunes. DownBeat Magazine calls the Lobero Theatre, “a true jewel of a jazz room,” and recognizes the Lobero each year in their prestigious guide to the worlds’ 150 Great Jazz Venues. Brad Mehldau Trio and The Bad Plus will be the closing performance of the Jazz at the Lobero 2012-13 season. Tickets for Brad Mehldau Trio and The Bad Plus are on sale now at Lobero.com. # # # The musical personality of 2012 DownBeat Readers Poll winner, Brad Mehldau, is a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser and greatly cherishes the surprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music and it informs everything he plays. The two sides of Mehldau’s personality—the improviser and the formalist—play off each other and the effect is often something like controlled chaos. In addition to his trio and solo projects, Mehldau has worked with a number of great jazz musicians, including a rewarding gig with saxophonist Joshua Redman’s band, recordings and concerts with Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz, and recording as a sideman with the likes of Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter, John Scofield and Charles Lloyd. “Universally admired as one of the most adventurous pianists to arrive on the jazz scene in years.” ― The Los Angeles Times 1 The Bad Plus has spent more than a decade redefining what a piano-bass-drums trio can and should be. They’ve reached audiences of all demographic stripes with an uncompromising body of original music plus some ingenious, genrejumping covers and dedicated touring around the globe. Throughout their career, The Bad Plus (bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson and drummer David King) have held fast to a band ethos centered around remaining deeply collaborative with no defined leader, and a belief in what its members like to call “avant-garde populism,” or progressive, musically sophisticated ideas without highbrow trappings. “Better than anyone at mixing the sensibilities of post-60's jazz and indie rock.” - The New York Times For 13 years now, Jazz at the Lobero has been delivering the finest jazz artists, as well as inspiring and growing jazz audiences in Santa Barbara with the Lobero Brubeck Circle of supporters. During 2011-2012 this designated fund allowed over 100 students to participate in hands-on exercises with Grammy nominated singer Tierney Sutton, 80 high school and college students to work with the Brubeck Jazz Institute Quintet and awarded $3,000 to area schools in order to continue their jazz-specific programs.
