No, I'm not talking about fleas; but rather the slightly bigger insect called a tick. Other than attaching themselves to warm blooded creatures, the general public isn't aware of the disease they can carry. positive, it will always be positive for Lyme. A positive blood test means that the dog was exposed to Borrelia Burgdorferi but not all dogs that are exposed show signs of the disease. Any dog that is tested positive should have a blood chemistry run to check liver and kidney function. Lyme disease was first diagnosed in 1975 in a town called Lyme, Connecticut. Today, Lyme is the most common vector-borne disease in people and dogs in the United States. Lyme can also affect horses, cattle and cats. It is not possible for an owner or another dog to contract Lyme disease just by having contact with their Lyme Positive dog. A tick and only a tick must transmit it. The treatment for Lyme is easily treated with a course of antibiotics. The common signs of Lyme disease in dogs are sudden lameness, joint pain/ stiffness. Other signs can include fever, lack of appetite, dehydration, inactivity, and swollen lymph nodes. In severe cases, the bacteria can cause kidney, liver and heart failure, which can lead to death. Any animal that comes in with the preceding symptoms is usually tested for Lyme disease. There is a simple blood test available in most veterinary clinics that will give results in 8 minutes. Once a dog is tested The signs of Lyme disease usually regress rapidly in response to treatment. The antibiotics don't get rid of the disease completely; rather it makes it go into a "remission". If the disease is left untreated, it will become chronic and can cause kidney, liver or heart damage, which may lead to death. The best way to avoid Lyme disease altogether is to remember to apply monthly flea and tick preventative year-round, especially if you live in a tickinfested area. After bringing your dog in from outside, go over his coat and make sure there are no ticks attached. Ticks should be removed carefully with tweezers, pinching the tick near the point at where they enter the skin. Early removal of a tick cuts down on the chance of the tick transmitting the bacteria. There is also a Lyme vaccine available, however this vaccine is only 80-85% effective. Lyme disease should be taken very seriously and requires aggressive treatment. Please feel free to talk to your vet at your next appointment about getting your dog tested and vaccinated for Lyme disease! -Sarah Laudenberger, Nurse page 2 Black Horse Post Doggy Daycare fills niche for dogs and owners Thousands of pet owners work all day, and this requires leaving your dog at home while you work. However, your dog needs to be well trained and socialized to promote good habits. If you are considering canine Obedience Training, Black Horse Animal Hospital offers this service. BHAH offers a 7 week program to clients and their pets. We have a certified canine obedience trainer that works one on one with your dog. This service is offered either in the presence of your home or at our facility. Obedience training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. It can make living together more enjoyable. The most common car trip is usually to the vet, and that event causes enough anxiety by itself. Getting stressed out by the car ride to the vet may make it difficult to tell what is "normal" and what is stress-related on the physical exam for some cats. Here are some tips to reduce travel stress to the vet's office and beyond: Transport in carrier Short Trips Offer a treat Sedation Medication prior to trip (contact vet) -Carlee Wagner, Nurse ”With patience and understanding you can teach any old dog new tricks, depending on what you are trying to teach, or un-teach the dog, which is usually more difficult.” page 4 Black Horse Post Recipes from Kim ~ “Fresh Tomato Salsa” INGREDIENTS: 2-3 medium tomatoes METHOD: 1.
