International Module Name: Dr. Phyllis D. Adams, Ed.D. College: Motlow State Community College Course: Fundamentals of Speech (SPCH 1010) Module Title: A Study of International Speakers on Today’s Worldview Module Description: This module will afford students in the Public Speaking class to study the style, delivery and content of international speakers and assess how their speeches and presentational style have impacted and influenced the world. The student will be given a website which will include speakers and speeches to be used for this assignment. The Informative Speech is the speech that this module will study and the students will be given specific directions and guidelines to ensure clarity, appropriateness and success of this assignment. Students will develop a greater understanding and appreciation of cultures, diversity and international influences. The primary purpose of this module is to increase knowledge, comprehension and application of rhetorical expression as it relates culturally. Through this International Module students in the Speech classes will also be introduced to a variety of International Speakers and therefore enhance their knowledge base of these world leaders. Students will have an opportunity to study, review, analyze and critique the speaker’s delivery style, podium presence, content and organizational approach, as well as how the audiences have developed their worldviews through their messages. Module Objectives: Objective 1: Students in Speech classes will develop a greater knowledge of international speakers, cultural differences, diverse perspectives and world issues other than their own, as well as the impact and influence that these international speakers have on the worldview. SLOs (Knowledge) 1a Students will increase their knowledge of cultures in the world around them by studying and researching international speakers. Objective 2: Students in Speech classes will acquire increased understanding of the international aspects of communication and public speaking. SLOs (Comprehension) 2a.Students will understand how international cultural diversity shapes the foundational elements, theory, research, and practices of various academic disciplines and related occupations/professions, including gaining a better understanding of how decisions are made and how people are affected by what they see, hear and witness through written and public delivery. Objective 3: Students in Speech classes will demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the interdependency and consequences of international speakers and their impact on decision making, world events and issues in today’s society. SLOs (Application) 3b. Students will articulate the perspectives of other cultures and nations when analyzing world events, and will apply their knowledge as they present their perspective on the delivery, style, content and overall impressions of the speech that they analyzed for a better understanding of how the world is influenced and impacted by international speakers. Methodology: This module, A Study of International Speakers on Today’s Worldview, will be introduced in the classroom lecture on Informative Speeches. A lecture on cultural diversity, notable international speakers and notable world events and world issues will be infused in the classroom lecture as a means of sharing a theoretical framework for the students to understand the methodology and process of this assignment. A video presentation of an international speaker presented in the class will be a valuable tool to use as the professor introduces and explains this assignment. Each professor should have the academic freedom to select a speaker of their choice to use for this presentation to be selected from a list of identified speakers to be included in this module. Assignments: Each student will identify an international speaker to study from a required list and must have the topic (Speaker’s Name and Speech) authorized by the Professor before proceeding with this assignment. The Professor has the discretion to accept the same speaker for multiple students in each class section. In order to gleam a full perspective of this assignment it is required that no more than three students per section choose the same speaker. Every student should select a different speech for analysis. As the Professor introduces this International Module the lecture should include a detailed analysis of the requirements and guidelines for this project. The Professor will help each student gain a greater knowledge and understanding of the impact and influence that these international speakers have on the world. The lecture should include, but not be limited to the following content: Definition of culture Examples of International Speakers- names and short biographical sketch Video Presentation of a Speech Delivered by an International Speaker Explanation of the methodology of the assignment, guidelines and due dates Discussion of world issues that have been affected by human communication Evaluations: Students will be graded on the Informative Speech required scale as shared in the course outline. The research paper and visual presentation will be graded according to a rubric provided in advanced to the students. The project will be at least 10% of the student’s grade for the course. Resources: Textbook, digital projections, audio presentations, web resources Benchmarks: A total of 70% of students will be expected to meet the standards as listed in the rubric with a score of 3 o4.
