RISE@WIU Bridge to Graduate School Awards
M. & C. Wong Bridge Award
Description & Criteria: This is a $350 award intended to support the cost of
graduate school applications (GRE and/or GRE subject fees) and application fees for
RISE students.
Number of scholarships: Three RISE@WIU awards are available. Priority will be
given to one student from each department (Physics, Chemistry or Biology). If a
department does not have suitable applicants, the second and third best
applications from any of the RISE@WIU departments will be considered. Students
enrolled in the Biology, Chemistry or Physics Master’s Degree Programs that are
applying for Ph.D. school will also be considered.
Scholarship applicant requirements:
1. Department of Biological Sciences, Physics or Chemistry major or MS
graduate student.
2. Sophomore, junior, or senior with at least a 2.8 GPA or MS graduate student
in Biology, Physics or Chemistry.
3. Undergraduate students should be enrolled in the RISE (Research Inspiring
Student Excellence) program (contact Dr. Porras-Alfaro or your RISE
department coordinator if you have questions about how to be part of RISE).
Student must submit (see application form below):
1. List of graduate program(s) to which the student has applied and potential
advisor(s) (indicated if potential advisor(s) have been contacted).
2. Graduate statement.
3. Short statement of career goals and an explanation of how this award will be
important to fulfilling those goals.
4. Receipts if GRE was already taken.
5. Curriculum vitae.
6. One letter of recommendation.
7. Official transcript.
Terms: $350 to cover GRE or GRE subject expenses or graduate school application
fees. For reimbursement, student must submit receipts and proof of application to at
least one graduate program. Student must submit a picture that will be used for the
announcement of the award, news release, etc. Student must update the RISE
coordinator if accepted in graduate school. Research pictures should be sent to the
RISE coordinator.
Selection Process: Recipients will be ranked by the Department Awards Committees
and final selections will be made by the RISE@WIU committee.
Deadline for Application: March 25th at 12pm. Submit your application to your
Department's secretary. Recipient will be selected in April.
