Study of Acts: The nature of transformational churches
 Acts 1:8 thesis
 Transformational churches buy into this purpose & it results in TRANSFORMED PEOPLE who
are used by God to TRANSFORM PEOPLE!!!
o People whose whole lives are changed…who think differently…manage money
differently…relate to others differently…raise kids differently…people who are different
than they were before they met Jesus!
 This message presses deeper and deeper into our very souls
 And it pushes us further and further out into new spheres of relationships for
the sake of helping others find Christ and find the life they were created for…
o Can God really transform lives? My scary neighbor? Professor? ME???
The Transformation of Paul (demythologize)
1. His Pre-Transformation State
Acts 9:1-2  1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's
disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so
that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them
as prisoners to Jerusalem.


Acts 8:1-3  1 And Saul was there, giving approval to his death. On that day a great
persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were
scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply
for him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off
men and women and put them in prison.
o A self-appointed Grand Inquisitor who was consumed with quarantining the
followers of Christ in Jerusalem and then stamping them out like he did Stephen…
o “destroying” or “ravaging” the church only used here in NT
 Stott - In Greek translation of Psalm 80:13,”used of wild boars devastating a
vineyard; and it especially refers to the ‘ravaging of a body by a wild beast.’”
 Acts 26:11  Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have
them punished, and I tried to force them to blaspheme. In my obsession
against them, I even went to foreign cities to persecute them.
Not just a vigilante, but also a powerful, scholarly, respected man
o Trained by Gamaliel (equivalent to Harvard PhD.)
o Sat on the Sanhedrin


o Pharisee
o Wealthy
o Roman citizen
Having this guy on your trail was like being hunted by a combination of Donald Trump, the
pope, and Jason Bourne…
Representative of a particular kind of person (that intimidates Christians & may be like
you!)
o Smart, articulate, confident, well-connected, successful, and wealthy
o Probably not a Christian alive that really believed he was about to be transformed,
but God had some special plans for him.
o Application for us???
 Who have you given up on or feared because they are so strong or hostile?
 Paul’s story reminds us to have hope for everyone
 Jesus is not just for people who are pre-disposed to faith because of
their good family or church background, or because of their good
moral lifestyle…Jesus is for the messed up (and that includes all of
us!!!)
 Are you like the pre-transformed Paul?
 Climbing up the ladder in your profession, with your retirement, in
your class, in your school sport, in your social circle…but internally
empty & angry???
 You can and MUST be transformed by Jesus!
2. His Transformation Experience
Acts 9:3-9  3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around
him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute
me?" 5 "Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he
replied. 6 "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do." 7 The men
traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got
up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand
into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.
Details:
 He and his companions had nearly completed their 150 mile journey (probably took a week)
 Why is there no record of Paul seeking Jesus or praying a prayer for Jesus to come into His
heart?
o Acts 26:13-14  13 About noon…as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven,
brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions. 14 We all fell to the
ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, 'Saul, Saul, why do you
persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'
o “goads” = sharp sticks used by farmers to get their animals to obey; if an animal
kicked against these it proved very painful for it.
o What “goads” was Paul kicking against?
 Jesus
 May have met Jesus…at least had heard about him...
 Couldn’t get Jesus and/or Jesus’ words & acts out of his mind


 Jesus was pursuing Paul…the Hound of Heaven…
 Stephen
 Paul had been whipped by him in debate, brought a false accusation
against Stephen, heard Stephen’s incredible speech about God’s
grace, presided over a lynch mob killing Stephen, and then heard
Stephen pray for Jesus to forgive his murderers!!!
 This experience was like a sharp stick goading his mind and heart
 His own conscience
 Romans 7:7ff biographical confession of his own conscience being
pricked by the reality that, zealous and devout as he was, Paul still
could not keep the law perfectly
 The trifecta that Paul could not silence no matter how hard he tried
 Application for us???
 Recognize that the Hound of Heaven is still on the loose
o Is He pursuing you? Are you resisting? Why?
o How did He pursue you? Good to remember…
o Do you really believe He is pursuing people all around
you?
Is Paul’s conversion typical?
o Many dismiss this experience, find no connection with it, or use it as an excuse not
to be more radical for Christ…
o Atypical elements:
 Blinding light, voice from heaven that addressed him by name, blindness
o Applicable elements:
 We can (AND MUST) personally encounter Jesus, surrender to Him, and
respond to His call to be His witness to our world
 Are these elements evident in your life? If not, maybe you have not yet
embraced Jesus…
How was he persecuting Jesus???
o This is the crucial truth of the body of Christ in action…we are spiritually linked with
Jesus when we place our hope and faith in Him
o Jesus so identifies with us that when someone seeks to harm us because of Him, it is
the same as people trying to harm Him directly.
o Application for us???
 When you become a Christian you are not joining a social club, but deeply
united with other believers…
 Jesus does protect us and is very aware of all that is going on in our lives.
But this does not exempt us from all harm.
3. Transformation through Connection with the Community
Acts 9:10-19a  10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a
vision, "Ananias!""Yes, Lord," he answered. 11 The Lord told him, "Go to the house of Judas on
Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has
seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight." 13 "Lord,"
Ananias answered, "I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your
saints in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all
who call on your name." 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to
carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16 I will show him
how much he must suffer for my name." 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing
his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you
were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy
Spirit." 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up
and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
Ananias is a hero!!! Why???
 He had reason to fear Paul (going to him could be suicide)
 He had reason to be filled with anger & bitterness against Paul (likely had lost some
friends to Paul’s inquisition)
 Ananias extended phenomenally tangible grace to Paul:
o He went!
o He placed his hands on him…
o He called him “brother”
o He spoke vision to him & baptized him
o He probably cooked for him & stayed with him
 Application for us???
o We can all be like Ananias! In fact we MUST be…
 Who do you need to go to…to care for…to speak welcoming words to…
 You can’t be an Ananias without experiencing grace yourself…
o We all have Ananiases in our lives…
 Who has been like Ananias to you? How can you thank him/her?
Acts 9:19b-30  Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. 20 At once he began to
preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. 21 All those who heard him were astonished
and asked, "Isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this
name? And hasn't he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?" 22 Yet Saul grew
more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the
Christ. 23 After many days had gone by, the Jews conspired to kill him, 24 but Saul learned of their
plan. Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him. 25 But his followers
took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall. 26 When he came to
Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really
was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul
on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he
had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. 28 So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely
in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He talked and debated with the Grecian
Jews, but they tried to kill him. 30 When the brothers learned of this, they took him down to
Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.
To be transformed, we all need a Barnabas in our lives!!! Why???
 Barnabas was an advocate for Paul
o He saw the change that had occurred in Paul
o He spoke about this change to Paul & others
o He stood with Paul is a difficult time
o He believed in Paul!!! (and that Christ transforms lives…)


Barnabas was a mentor to Paul
o Acts 11:25-26
Application for us???
o Who are you advocating for as they try to walk with God? Who has or is advocating
for you? Mentoring and developing?
Barnabas was a transformed person who was used by God to transform people.
Ananias was a transformed person who was used by God to transform people.
Because of God’s pursuit of him and the investment of these guys, Paul became a transformed person
who was used by God to transform people.
A transformational church is FULL of transformed people like this…
ARE YOU A TRANSFORMED PERSON???
