Maurice Williams HHPK 247 MOVIE REVIEW Gattaca was a great movie about a guy named Vincent who had everybody against him from the time he was born. He was born with a low life expectancy and a very high risk of a heart problem. As a result his family and peers around him treated him as if he was a lesser being than everyone else. Vincent was treated differently from the time he was born. In the movie as soon he was born the doctors took a sample of his blood and a computer predicted the likelihood of everything Vincent would have throughout his life. Based off of that Vincent’s dad decided to change his name at birth from being named after him to Vincent because he felt Vincent wouldn’t amount to anything for him to be proud of. So Vincent’s parents had another kid and had him basically created from their seeds to have the best advantage their kid could possibly have. They named him Anton and favored him over Vincent. So With that complex Vincent was set to defy all the odds and always challenged his brother to prove he was just as good or better but always lost. Then one day he finally beat him and instead of stopping their he set out to try and become something great. Then he came to realize that no matter what he did and proved, his blood said differently so no one would give him a chance. So what he ended up doing is using the blood, pee, and fingerprints of another guy who had the blood/DNA of someone who was destined to be great to achieve his dream. It was a very hard and extremely difficult task especially when he became a suspect for a murder case but his determination got him threw it. He had to go through some very difficult extremes to keep his dream alive but it wasn’t anything he wasn’t willing to do. The top detective on his case turned out to be his brother so once his brother found out the murder suspect was his brother who he thought was dead already he made sure he met up with him. After meeting up with him Vincent is challenged by his brother Anton one more time to prove that he truly is just as good if not better physically and the last time wasn’t just a fluke win. So Anton still comes up with a win and proves once and for all they he deserves to be treated just as everyone else. Then on the last scene of the movie the doctor who tested Anton to make sure he was who he claimed to be admits to knowing that Anton was faking to be someone this whole time but was cheering for him since he was an inspiration story to his son. Gattaca had a real good lesson to be learned after watching the movie. In the end the main story someone should get out it is to never let anyone else tell you what you can and can’t do. Anton had all the odds stacked against him and it was very difficult but because he was determined he was able to make up for the physical traits he lacked from birth. He was able to take control of his own fate threw taking the identity of someone else. He says at the end of the movie, “Just remember I was just as good if not better than most” (Niccol, 1997). He didn’t use the aid of any adapted physical education or activity, just pure determination to make his dreams come true. If you had to some up what this movies sets out to prove, it’s that if you work hard enough at your dreams you can make it happen, it’s just a matter of how bad do you want it.
