Jesus’ birth is for all who will seek the LORD.
20b “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for
that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a
son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from
their sins.”

Matthew 1:18-25
The Birth of Jesus through Ancient Eyes
Jesus’ birth is for all who have forsaken the LORD.
20b “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for
that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a
son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from
their sins.”
Text Message:
o Ancient eyes would see this story against the larger backdrop
of Israel’s story.
o There is indication that Matthew has patterned Joseph’s
experience here with the book of Hosea, as both men:
1) Were told by God to take wives who would bear children
that were not their own (Hosea 1:2).
2) Did not experience marital intimacy for a specified season
of time (Hosea 3:1-5).
3) Were told by God to name the children who did not belong
to them (Hosea 1:4-10).
o The purpose was to reveal two simple yet profound truths:
1) From Hosea: Israel had forsaken the LORD.
2) From Matthew: Jesus would be the remedy for this.
Text Message:
o We’ve seen so far the Jesus story here is a retelling of the 8th
century B.C. story of Hosea with a new, unexpected ending.
o Interestingly, Both the Hebrew name Hosea (Hoshea) and the
Greek name Jesus mean the same thing: salvation.
o The story of Hosea contained three significant parts:
1) Israel had forsaken the Lord (Hosea 1:2).
2) Israel would be exiled and then seek the LORD (3:1-5).
3) Israel would be fully restored (Hosea 2:20-23).
o Underline the phrase beginning with, “for he will save…”
o Ancient eyes would see that this Child, Jesus, would be God’s
solution to bring about both seeking the LORD and restoration!
o In other words, exile is over! Be restored to God!
o Advent reminds us that what was first done for Israel is for the
entire world! Christ has opened the way for all to seek God!
Jesus’ birth is for all who will receive the LORD.
“Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that
which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son,
and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their
sins.” Matthew 1:20b-21
Text Message:
o Here is how Hosea 2:23 describes Israel’s restoration:
And I will have mercy on No Mercy, and I will say to Not My People,
‘You are my people’; and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’”
o God’s solution to this is only in His Son, Jesus:
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave
the right to become children of God. John 1:12
