Dalhousie Research Services FASS RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT FUND FOR THE HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES FACULTY TRAVEL GRANT TO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES GUIDELINES The deadlines for international conference travel applications are: May 1st, September 15th, January 15th. Faculty travel grants to international conferences are designed to enable Canadian scholars to take part in international meetings of major scholarly significance and, therefore, contribute to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the social sciences or the humanities. Applications will be considered for participation in both regular international congresses and more narrowly focused international conferences that take place outside Canada and the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska). As this funding is intended to supplement other available funding sources, applicants must provide evidence of their ability to secure funds from the appropriate faculty travel committee or other source. Applications for financial support from the FASS-RDF are reviewed by the Research Development Committee (RDC) of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Faculty members holding a full-time appointment at Dalhousie University are eligible to apply for FASS-RDF funds (professor emeriti and adjunct faculty members are not eligible). Faculty members holding limited term appointments of 50% or more may also apply, but the costs associated with conference travel must be expended during the period of their appointment. To be eligible, the faculty member must normally be in a discipline supported by SSHRC, and the nature of the conference must fall under the mandate of SSHRC. Retroactive applications will NOT be accepted. Applicants must be persons who will play an active role in the conference, either by presenting a paper or acting as a discussant. Applications can be submitted in anticipation of a paper being submitted and accepted. The application will be reviewed by the RDC and, if approved, funding will be contingent on receipt of proof of the paper being accepted (or confirmation of discussant role). Priority will be given to applicants who will be presenting a paper. The Committee will grant higher priority to those applicants that are within the first 5 years of their appointment at Dalhousie. The Committee will also take into consideration alternate sources of available funding when making its decision. Grants made under the terms of this programme will cover the following items of expenditure: i) Airfare from the airport closest to the applicant’s residence to the airport closest to the conference site. The Committee as a rule requires that grant holders travelling by air will take the lowest cost economy flights. Only in exceptional circumstances will the Committee pay higher rates. ii) Living allowances and hotel rates according to international rates available on Dalhousie University Financial Services website http://www.dal.ca/finserv and http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/travel/travel_e.html (See Appendix D). iii) Required conference registration fees. The maximum amount awarded for delivery of a paper will be $1,000 (per applicant) once every twelve-month period. The maximum awarded to support a discussant role will be $500. The Committee may, at its discretion, make partial awards covering only a portion of the expenses normally eligible, should it prove necessary to provide some assistance to a larger number of deserving scholars. The total amount of funding awarded cannot exceed the FASS International Travel Fund in any fiscal year. Applicants must submit the application as a PDF document by 4:00 p.m. on the deadline date or the Monday following if the deadline date falls on a weekend to: frank.harvey@dal.ca with a copy to paulette.chiasson@dal.ca and her/his Department Chair.
