[List any details about local event here] On the surface, science fiction films are about robots, spaceships, and travel to other times and planets. However, sci-fi often tackles social issues such as racism, sexism, equality, and poverty. This presentation explores the ways that science fiction examines our history, culture, and personal decisions. Dennis Etzel, Jr., is a poet and teaches writing and film courses at Washburn University. He has published work in the Denver Quarterly, Indiana Review, and BlazeVOX journals, among others, and is the author of a poetry chapbook, The Sum of Two Mothers. “When we think of the elements that make up science fiction, we might be moved to thinking about spaceship battles and interplanetary travel,” observed Etzel. “However, Science Fiction often describes contemporary human stories.” “Science Fiction and Social Awareness” is part of the Kansas Humanities Council’s Humanities Speakers Bureau, featuring presentations and discussions that examine our shared human experience—our innovations, culture, heritage, and conflicts. -MORE- Page 2 – Presentation Explores Science Fiction and Society The Kansas Humanities Council conducts and supports community-based programs, serves as a financial resource through an active grant-making program, and encourages Kansans to engage in the civic and cultural life of their communities.
