How will the girls show their appreciation for the gift the Troop Leader has given with her time and commitment?
The girls just love Ms. Jane. They say thank you to her at the end of every meeting. At our sleepover they treated
her like royalty, bringing her food and drinks, waiting on her. The best show of appreciation though is that they
did this all on their own. None of the parents “prodded” the girls. They have truly learned to be a team and to be
thankful for their Girl Scout experience. They are all involved in planning the ceremony where they will receive
their awards and have a special surprise for Ms. Jane and hope to present her with this award at that time.
What service date(s) is this volunteer being recognized for? (for example 2001 – 2002) 2013-2014
Answer at least 3 of the 5 questions.
1. In what ways has the leader helped the girls to grow in understanding themselves and their values and using
their knowledge and skills to explore the world? (DISCOVER)
Ms. Jane plans things for the girls to discover, but more importantly she has given them all a new habit to be
curious. The girls take the lead now to pursue subjects or things they find interesting. She doesn’t discourage
them having a tablet, smartphone or lap top computer handy and anytime during the meeting something
comes up instead of asking Ms. Jane someone is in charge of researching.
2. How does the leader make sure that the activities in the troop involve learning by doing? Give some examples.
(LEARNING BY DOING)
If the activity is about something one of the girls has some knowledge of, she let’s that girl lead the activity.
Every meeting involves things the girls do and take an active part in. If there is something the girls need or
want to find out about, she has them do the research and then share what they find.
3. How have the girls gained practical life skills? (Discover outcome)
Teaching the girls to be curious as a habit is a very important life skill. Teaching someone to want to learn is
more important than any academic subject, then they will always be a learner.
4. How is communication maintained between the families and the GS Troop? (Connect outcome)
Ms. Jane has a good relationship with all the girls families. She spends time both during and outside of the
girls activities to talk with parents. She gets the families together 2-3 times each year. She asks different
families to host the gatherings so she can spend time with the parents and occasionally extended family like
grandparents too.
5. How are the girls involved in GS Troop decisions? (Girl led outcome)
The girls decide on everything. One of the parents questioned the girls donating some of their hard-earned
funds to a local animal shelter. Ms. Jane asked the girls to think of their parents like the Board of their
company. She asked them to share the research they did about this organization and make a presentation to
their parents about why they wanted to do this and how the funds were to be used, inviting the director to
come speak to the parents. All of the parents were so impressed.

How will the girls show their appreciation for the gift the Troop Cookie Manager has given with her/his time and
commitment?
The girls have taken turns each meeting during the cookie season bringing a homemade “thank you” item for Ms.
Jean. Cards, Cookies, poems, etc. In addition, they are going to write or draw something in their own words
and/or pictures to add to the nomination to give to Ms. Jean when we present her with this award.

Ms. Jean contacted several business owners in our community such as a local restaurant, busy corner store &
gas station & bank. She built relationships with these community leaders and they agreed to let the girls sell

advertising to their friends parents, and making picture frames to give the businesses something to hang to
show their community involvement.
7. How did the nominee impact the girls in a positive manner?

skills. They had been in Girl Scouts a long time and had a great reputation for good sales records. They were
terrific.
10. How did the nominee help the parents learn about the GS Cookie Program?
Ms. Jean planned a meeting just for the parents so they could learn their role in supporting their daughters

their experience, coaching them and congratulating them in their achievements.
