Monday Trip A Visit to the Lipstick Museum & KPM Royal Porcelain Factory A former make-up artist of Yves Saint Laurent Beauté, charismatic René Koch, is well known for his expert use of camouflage make-up and has worked in Paris and New York. He is offering an exclusive visit to his very unique Lipstick Museum. The collector displays his private exhibition of lipsticks from all over the world, ranging from modern examples, to those from baroque times. During his guided tour, he relates interesting stories from his work with film and music stars. After the tour, there will be an opportunity to ask beauty questions, accompanied by a glass of sparkling wine, or a coffee and cake. The group will continue on to the KPM porcelain factory. This historic building complex, featuring the kiln hall, porcelain paste preparation facility and former turnery, is one of the oldest surviving commercial sites in Berlin. During the tour, visitors will gain a fascinating insight into the art of making porcelain and manufactory in Berlin. Visitors will learn about the development of the factory’s trademark – the cobalt-blue sceptre, and will be shown various unique exhibits, whilst exploring KPM’s past, from the earliest days to the present. After a chance to see the historic kiln hall, visitors proceed to the centrepiece, the model and mould archive, and the show workshop, where craft persons demonstrate their talents. Lipstick Museum KPM Royal Porcelain Time: 09.00-14.15 Trip B Jewish history in Berlin Following the path of Jewish history in Berlin, this tour will lead you to the Memorial of the Murdered Jews of Europe, located in the centre of Berlin. A place for remembrance and commemoration, the Field of Stele has been designed by architect Peter Eisenman and consists of 2,711 steles. Visitors may walk through the memorial. The next stop will be at the Synagogue. Once the largest Jewish building in Germany it is now an important landmark and irreplaceable symbol of Jewish life in Berlin. The tour continues with a visit to the Jewish Museum, designed by Daniel Liebeskind. With over 3000 square metres of exhibition space, the museum takes everyone on a journey through two millennia of German-Jewish history. Memorial Synagogue Jewish Museum Time: 09.30-14.45 Trip C Cold War tour For those with a special interest in German history during the division of the city, this trip is a must. The guide will point out the most impressive and important places and give everyone a good insight into this period of German history. There are not many sections of the Wall left, but, there are still some impressive parts to be visited. The most famous piece is the so-called East Side Gallery, where artists from all over the world were invited to paint pictures, inspired by Berlin history. There will be a visit to the famous Checkpoint Charlie Museum, which should not be missed. During the building of the Wall in August 1961, Checkpoint Charlie was the famous scene of a six day stand-off between American and Soviet tanks – with their motors running and guns loaded. Trip E City boat cruise It is a little known fact that Berlin is criss-crossed with waterways and man-made canals, there are more bridges in the city than in Venice! During the cruise you will not only see the historical city centre, Museum Island and the Berlin cathedral, but also the modern face of “New Berlin” such as the government district, with the German parliament and new central train station “Hauptbahnhof”. Many of the new building projects are situated by the river Spree. This cruise is a great way to discover the city from a new viewpoint. Boat cruise Time: 09.45-14.15 Tuesday Trip A Shopping tour – City East & West Berlin is full of interesting and elegant fashion stores. The first stop will be the Kurfürstendamm, home to many designer shops, plus the huge department store KaDeWe. The group will be greeted with a glass of champagne before setting out to explore Berlin’s fashions and designers, as well as some of Germany’s regional delicacies spread across the exclusive food court of the KaDeWe. The tour continues to the Eastern part of the city and its famous shopping boulevard Friedrichstraße, with its brand new shopping arcades and department stores. A tour through the treasures of the Gallery La Fayette will show everyone the latest trends and an insight into Berlin’s fashion scene. KaDeWe Gallery La Fayette Time: 09.30-14.15 Trip B Walking tour – Museum Island This tour gives everyone an insight into one of the city’s cultural highlights – Museum Island. Centrally located and surrounded by the river Spree, Museum Island – with its five museums – is a designated UNESCO world heritage site. A walking tour is ideal to discover the wealth of culture on exhibition. The trip includes a visit to the New Museum, with its most famous exhibit, the bust of Nefertiti. Museum Island Time: 09.45-14.15 Trip C Bunker tour & visit to Berlin Wall Memorial Follow the path of the Cold War and start with a tour through Berlin’s underground bunker system. In West Berlin civil defence shelters were reactivated or newly built in preparation for a possible nuclear war – particularly after the building of the Berlin Wall. Some of these bunkers were built as ‘multipurpose structures’ and are currently used as underground stations, parking garages and storage facilities. By explaining the practical preparations made to help people survive, this tour attempts to make the realities and horrors of such conflict easy to comprehend. The tour continues overground to the Berlin Wall Memorial, the central memorial site of German division. Situated at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse, the memorial contains the last piece of Berlin Wall with the preserved grounds behind it and is thus able to convey an impression of how the border fortifications developed until the end of the 1980s. The events that took place here, together with the preserved historical remnants and traces of border obstacles on display help to make the history of Germany’s division comprehensible. Berlin Wall Memorial Time: 09.15-14.15 Trip D Architecture tour This trip has been cancelled. Trip E National Galleries – Old versus New A tour for art lovers – combining the old and the new. It begins at the Old National Gallery, which owns one of the largest collections of 19th century sculptures and paintings in Germany, together with numerous high quality Impressionist paintings. Early acquisitions include masterpieces by Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne and sculptures by Auguste Rodin. Moving on to the more recent periods of fine art, is a visit to the New National Gallery – a focal point for lovers of contemporary art and architecture. The building, opened in 1968 and features the impressive modern architecture of Mies van der Rohe. There are regular themed exhibitions, alongside the permanent collection, ranging from contemporary to the art of the 1960s, featuring works of Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Klee and Kandinsky amongst others.
