ARMENTA, Manuel
Manual Armenta, a tribal elder of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, passed away at his home
surrounded by his family on August 24, 2012.
Mr. Armenta is survived by his wife of 59 years, Iona Armenta, and his children:
Susanna Marrs, Manuel "Bo" Armenta, Raul Armenta, Lorenzo Armenta, Tony Armenta,
Ruth Pace, Vincent Armenta, Maria Feely, Dale Horenberger, and more than 50
grandchildren and great-grand children. He was preceded in death by three children:
Paul Armenta, Ray Horenberger and Nancy Rodriguez.
Mr. Armenta, who resided on the Santa Ynez Reservation since 1979, was born in Santa
Ynez on June 17, 1930 and spent most of his life in the Santa Ynez Valley. He served in the military in the
U.S. Army and fought for his country in the Korean War.
He was a dedicated member of his tribe and was active in a variety of tribal projects throughout the years.
The father of 12, Mr. Armenta took great pride in attending his children's sporting events throughout their
school years. He also went on hunting trips with his sons and, eventually, his grandsons. He instilled in all
his children a strong work ethic and a desire to serve their community.
Funeral services will be held on August 29 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mission Santa Ines.
