TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Eligibility and application process:
1. Entrants must submit an essay of 1,500 (+/-10%) on the given topic by email to
anita.cheah06@imperial.ac.uk before 23:59 on 17th February 2011.
2. Applicants should pay a £5 admin cost for competition entry using the following link:

3. The applicant must be a medical student in his/her 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th year at a
recognised teaching institution within the UK or Republic of Ireland with a minimum
of one year clinical training at the time of the elective
4. Only one entry is allowed per person
The essay:
5. Every essay should be accompanied by an abstract (150-250 words)
6. The essay should not contain any visuals or special characters
7. The following are examples (but not an exhaustive list) of behaviour/action which is
prohibited:







Anything abusive or threatening
Material which is sexist, racist, homophobic, obscene or likely to harass or cause distress or
be disruptive
Spamming
Swearing
Multiple posting
Advertising
Impersonation
The winner:
8. Within one month of their return to the UK, the prize winner is expected to write a
500 word report on his/her experience
9. The winner will be put in touch with Maternity Worldwide to arrange his/her
elective.
10. The £400 grant can contribute to costs such as: flights, living costs (food,
accommodation), visas, vaccinations, travel insurance (non-exhaustive list). The
winner will be required to provide a brief expenses report on their return.

ELECTIVE AWARD
Submission Deadline: 23:59 on 17th February 2011 (electronic copy)
Notification Date: 1st March 2011
Prize: The winning essay will be offered the opportunity to conduct an elective in
Ethiopia organised by Maternity Worldwide. IEF will give £400 to the winner to help
cover the elective costs.
Open to: All 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th year medical students at recognised teaching
institutions within the UK or Republic of Ireland, and with a minimum of one year
clinical training at time of the elective
Award Ceremony: 3rd March 2011 at the IEF-Maternity Worldwide Launch Event at
Imperial College London
Topic: “Why are maternal mortality rates so diverse in the world?”
Word limit: 1,500 (+/- 10%)
Abstract: 150-250 words
Selection: Academic review. The essays will be judged by elected representatives
from Maternity Worldwide.
