Origin and discovery of Irish-type orebodies: new isotopic methods
iCRAG seeks applicants for a postdoctoral researcher to implement Cu isotope analytical
techniques. The researcher will then apply Cu-Zn isotope and clumped O-C isotope analysis to
develop improved metallogenetic models and geochemical exploration techniques for carbonatehosted Zn-Pb orebodies, using the Navan Zn-Pb orebody. Cu-Zn isotope analysis will test the
hypothesis that Navan metal-bearing fluids originated at sufficient depth to mobilize copper,
allowing the possibility that Cu mineralisation underlies the Zn-Pb orebody. Clumped O-C isotope
analysis will be used to separate the temperature and fluid 13C and 18O signatures of
hydrothermal fluids, to constrain fluid flow in the orebody and its halo. This is an opportunity for a
lab-based researcher to develop skills in solution MC-ICP-MS techniques and apply novel isotopic
methods to a world class orebody, with the collaboration of Boliden Tara Mines who operate the
Navan Zn-Pb mine.
The postdoctoral appointment is for two years at a starting salary of €33,975K. The preferred
starting date is 1st September 2015. Applicants must have been awarded a PhD and experience in
solution MC-ICP-MS is essential. Peer reviewed publications and research experience of
hydrothermal processes are desirable. Please contact Dr Julian Menuge (j.f.menuge@ucd.ie) for
further information.
UCD School of Geological Sciences ( http://www.ucd.ie/geology/ ) hosts a Thermo Neptune MCICP-MS and solution chemistry , part of the National Centre for Isotope Geochemistry (NCIG).
Clumped isotope analyses will be carried out in collaboration with Dr Paul Dennis at the University
of East Anglia, UK.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae, list of publications and contact details of two
academic referees and should be sent to Dr Julian Menuge by email. Assessment of applications
will begin on 1st May 2015 and continue until the post is filled.
