Cone Health Student Course Work On-boarding Requirements

The school Academic Point of Contact (APOC) is responsible for verifying and maintaining documentation of student compliance with all Clinical Education Agreement and

Orientation requirements.

Requirements stated in the Clinical Education Agreement

Written medical verification of the following for each student and faculty member to be at

Facility prior to arrival. This applies to initial engagement at the facility and annually for the annual items below.

 A negative Twelve Panel Urine Drug Screen report test from a National

Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) approved laboratory on file prior to the first assignment\student experience at CH with the contracted school.

{Panel includes: AMP (amphetamine),BAR (barbituates), BZO

(benzodiazepines), COC (cocaine),THC (marijuana), MTD

(methadone), mAMP methamphetamine), MDMA (ectasy), OPI

(opiate), PCP (Phencyclidine) PPX (Propoxyphene), OXY (oxycodone)}

 Rubeola, Rubella, and Mumps: If born in 1957 or after need documentation of two (2) MMR’s or documented proof of disease history, serology evidence of immunity; if born before 1957 need one (1)

MMR documented or serology evidence of immunity

 Annual TB Skin Test (Mantoux Method/QuantiFERON or a 2-Step PPD test if this is the first PPD test. (See http://www.cdc.gov/tb/topic/testing/default.htm) If positive, chest xray should be negative and individual asymptomatic of TB with at least an annual assessment within three (3) months of starting the clinical assignment.

 Annual Flu vaccine (The only exemption will be with a family physician’s request on MD letterhead. Each exemption submitted will be reviewed by the Director, Infection Prevention and Employee Health).

 Chickenpox (documentation of 2 doses or documented proof of disease history, serology evidence of immunity to varicella)

 Tetanus/Diphtheria (a dose or Td or TDAP since age of 14)

 HBV immunization or sign the mandatory declination form and have been counseled regarding universal precautions

 Current American Heart Association CPR-Health Care Provider certification is required for all students involved in patient care contact.

Further clarification:

TB testing

QuantiFERON only is used for new employees. If the two-step method is used, it must be 1 – 3 weeks apart. If you have an healthcare worker who test positive for TB each time they do a PPD, they have to provide Cone Health Department with proof of a (-) chest x-ray each year or the TB Risk Assessment Tool annually for 5 years can be accepted in lieu of a CXR.

Influenza – egg allergies are no longer acceptable exceptions. Waiver requests have to be reviewed by the Occupational Health Medical Director.

Rubeola, Rubella and Mumps and Chicken Pox – documentation proof of disease history is not acceptable.

Tetanus / Diphtheria and Pertussis within 10 years is required

HBV – documentation of series of 3 vaccines or declination form

MMR – a note is required for pregnancy exception

Polio is not required for new employees

Urine Drug Test

Cone Health will accept urine drug testing that has been done for a student upon entry into a program of study or anytime during the program of study. If the urine drug testing was not done as a requirement for entry into or sometime during the program of study, it will need to be completed and results received by the school within 30 days prior to their first day of clinical at Cone Health.

Occupational Health is open to the students in the community for credentialing testing for a fee. Call 336.832.3600 to make an appointment.

Employees

 Employee students are required to complete the same on-boarding requirements as students that are not employees (except for orientation).

 Employee students that need to complete immunizations and/or a urine drug screen are referred to Employee Health.

 Cone Health will pay for a criminal background check, drug screen and/or immunizations due to Cone Health onboarding requirements if they do not already have these records through their school or Employee Health/Human

Resources. Cone Health will not pay for screenings not required by Cone but required by the employee’s school.

 Employees that are in school but will not be doing clinical at a CH facility can request an appointment at Occupational Health at Alamance or Employer

Services in the Black Box and pay a fee for testing and immunizations that are needed for their school but are not needed for employment at CH.

 Criminal Background Checks: Criminal Background checks should already be on file within HR for employees hired after 1-1-2000. Employees hired prior to

1-1-2000, need to obtain an acceptable criminal background check. See First

Point Form.
