Safeguarding Audit Tool for Registered childminders and home childcarers
Safeguarding requirements for the Early Years Register and the Childcare Register (compulsory and
voluntary) for childminders and home childcarers
Introduction
This document was produced by the Sheffield Safeguarding Advisors (Early Years). It sets out the various safeguarding requirements for
childminders and home childcarers on the Early Years and Childcare Registers. It is divided into three sections:
1. Written documentation required by Ofsted registered home based child carers
2. Notification requirements required by Ofsted registered home based child carers
3. Safeguarding related actions required by Ofsted registered home based child carers
Which Register?




Childminders are required to be on the Early Years Register if they are caring for children aged from birth to 31 August following their
fifth birthday
Childminders are required to be on the compulsory part of the Childcare Register if they are caring for children aged from 1
September following their fifth birthday up to the age of eight
Childminders may choose to be on the voluntary part of the Childcare Register if they are caring for children over 8
Home childcarers looking after children in the child’s own home may choose to be on the voluntary part of the Childcare Register
This means that childminders caring for children across the age range will need to meet the different requirements of the relevant
Registers simultaneously.
