I am pleased to inform you that the MOE Academic Research Fund (AcRF) Tier 2 February 2015 Grant Call is now open. The AcRF Tier 2 funds research projects on a competitive basis across the Singapore-based universities. 2. The MOE Tier 2 grant scheme is the premium investigator-led for academic research. You are urged to prepare early for this highly competitive grant. a) We have also attached documents on proposal writing tips and guide for your reference, including feedback from MOE. b) Under the “Abstract Section”, it is recommended for PIs to provide clear and specific objectives and to avoid general statements. c) Please be mindful of grammar and typographical errors. 3. Each grant proposal submitted should have a total project value (TPV) between $500,000 and $1 million over a three - year duration. Exception to the above TPV for projects are applied to projects under the Accountancy, Business, Humanities and Social Sciences discipline cluster (EP4) and the Pure Mathematics and Statistics projects. a) Projects under Accountancy, Business, Humanities and Social Sciences with TPV of $100,000 and above are eligible for funding under AcRF Tier 2. b) Only Pure Mathematics and Statistics projects under the Informatics and Mathematics discipline cluster (EP2) with TPV of S$250,000 and above are also eligible for funding under AcRF Tier 2. 4. Principal Investigators (PI) and Co-investigators (co-PI) need to be full-time faculty of the AUs in order to be eligible for AcRF Tier 2 funding. Collaborators can be based overseas. AcRF Tier 2 funding can only be spent on research conducted in the AUs. 5. Interested applicants are requested to submit the full proposals to RSO through your School/College for review by the NTU Research Council (NTURC) by 05 December 2014. 6. ** Writing Tips** [Extracted from the RGF Guidelines] Proposal Details: Information provided should be sufficiently self-contained for an assessment of the proposal without further reference to other materials. Anyone proposing a research project should be able to answer the following: - What are you trying to do? Articulate your objectives using absolutely no jargon. - How is it done today, and what are the limits of current practice? - What's new in your approach and why do you think it will be successful? - Who cares? If you're successful, what difference will it make? - What are the risks and the payoffs? - How much will it cost? How long will it take? - What are the mid-term and final "exams" to check for success? Quote by Professor David Currow: Most funders are buying something. They're not simply "granting" money. Quote by Michael J Spires: To put it simply, proposal writing is a sales pitch. 7. To facilitate the review and short listing of proposals by the NTU Research Council, please use the (attached) hardcopy application form and guidelines for the submission of your full proposal. Please refer to the attached budgetary guidelines in formulating your proposal. · Please also complete Annex A if you have previously submitted a similar proposal, but your proposal was not shortlisted by the NTU Research Council for submission to MOE. · Please complete Annex B if the scope of your proposal falls beyond a single discipline cluster. 8. RSO aims to have the review of proposals by the NTU Research Council completed by February 2015. 9. All shortlisted applicants will be required to submit their proposals via the MOE online system (OLGA). 10. Further queries may be directed to the RSO-AcRFTier2 queries email account [rsoacrftier2@ntu.edu.sg], through your School Administrators. Regards and all the best!
