The Bright Futures Educational Trust (BFET) is a partnership of schools based in the North West. The

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls (AGGS) was in the first cohort of schools to be designated a
National Teaching School in 2011. AGGS is the lead school in the “Alliance for Learning”. Our
teaching school alliance comprises schools of every type and phase, plus universities, throughout a
wide geographical area. The impact of teaching school activities is felt within the Trust and far
beyond. We have a reputation for excellence regionally and nationally, of which we are very proud.
Main responsibilities of the post holder





To lead all aspects of the SCITT Secondary English Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programme
To raise standards of student attainment and achievement within BFET by developing the
quality of teaching and learning for English teachers in the early stages of their career.
Recruitment to and management of the English ITT programme.
To lead the development of the Secondary English SCITT programme.
To effectively manage and deploy teaching/support staff and financial and physical resources
to support the development of the SCITT.
SCITT Secondary English Subject Leader responsibilities
 To lead the successful operation of all aspects of the Secondary English department of the
SCITT.
 To liaise with all partner schools, colleges and organisations to further develop primary
programmes.
 To manage the request of Secondary English places process in co-ordination with NCTL and
UCAS admissions systems.
 To manage recruitment and retention to all Secondary English ITT programmes and to ensure
a smooth and appropriate transition to the NQT phase.

 To be responsible for the day-to-day management of Secondary English trainees and act as a
positive role model.
 To contribute to training at both a subject and a general level.
 To quality assure programmes and placement experience to enable parity of experience.
 To oversee the training of Secondary English subject mentors and quality assure their role.
 To ensure the QA of Secondary English ITT provision and ensure that ITT programmes meet
statutory requirements for training across all phases (including primary).
 To evaluate the impact of the Secondary English training experience and modify the
programme accordingly.
 To contribute to the Course Development Group on a rolling programme.
 To contribute to the business planning function of the SCITT including action planning and
self-evaluation.
 To ensure that the Secondary English SCITT training programmes fully reflect the Trust’s
distinctive ethos and mission.
 To manage the Secondary English SCITT budget.
 To ensure that Health and Safety policies and practices, including risk assessments,
throughout the subject area are in-line with national requirements and are updated where
necessary, therefore liaising with the Trust’s Health and Safety Manager.
 To attend all appropriate meetings.
 To participate in the annual performance management cycle of all staff in the organisation
structure.
 To ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date information concerning ITT,
demonstrating key impacts, progress and intervention.
 To identify and take appropriate action on issues arising from data, systems and reports;
setting deadlines where necessary and reviewing progress on the action taken.
 To produce reports for the SCITT Director.
 To keep up-to-date with national developments in Secondary English teaching practice and
methodology.
 To actively monitor and respond to Secondary English curriculum development and initiatives
at national, regional and local levels.
 To lead on Secondary English SCITT liaison and marketing activities relating to ITT e.g. the
collection of material for press releases, specifically in relation to ITT.
