Saudi Arabia Malone Fellowship 2015
Cultural and Educational Exchange Experience for
Advisers of the Model Arab League program
APPLICATION FORM
The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations (NCUSAR), in collaboration with the Saudi
Arabian Cultural Mission to the U.S. (SACM) and the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Higher
Education (MOHE), is pleased to sponsor the Saudi Malone Fellowship 2015. Five American
collegiate professors, in addition to ten American students, will be selected for this prestigious
program, which lasts for approximately one calendar year. The Saudi Arabia Malone Fellowship
consists of three parts:
1. Pre-departure Period - October-December 2015: after being selected, participants build their
background knowledge of modern Saudi Arabia, prepare to be exposed to a new culture, and begin
to plan the logistics of the next year of Fellowship activities (see below).
2. Study Visit - December 26, 2015-January 6, 2016 (tentative): beginning with a pre-departure
orientation in Washington, DC, participants then travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for an
immersive experience in the country’s culture, society, and economics, as well as government
priorities, concerns and needs as they pertain to Saudi-U.S. relations and the Kingdom’s role in
regional and world affairs. Within the Kingdom, the delegation will be accompanied by two
NCUSAR escorts and various Saudi officials while being introduced to a broad range of
government and business representatives, academics, policymakers, specialists, and student
peers, as well as traditional and modern Saudi Arabian culture and life.
3. Fellowship Year - January-December 2016: after returning to the U.S., participants spend the
following calendar year implementing a variety of programs, events, and outreach efforts in their
home communities. These programs aim to share participants’ newfound knowledge of Saudi
Arabia with the American public, multiplying the educational impact of the program.
Eligibility: Faculty applicants must be U.S. citizens teaching at an accredited American university
or high school for the duration of the program. Advisers of the Model Arab League leadership
development program are eligible to apply. Eligible faculty members will be required to complete
the application process described below.
Program Purpose Statement
While thousands of Saudi Arabian students visit and study in the United States each year, very few
American students have a reciprocal opportunity. As a result, the average Saudi Arabian citizen
knows a great deal about American culture, economics, government, etc. while Americans remain
uninformed of the nuances, intricacies, and even basic details of a country of such strategic
importance and interest to the United States, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Arabia
Fellowship was formed to help remedy this shortcoming and enhance knowledge and understanding
of Saudi Arabia among America’s future leaders and general public.
