II. COURSE: Reading for College Success COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is targeted for students who are not "college-ready" in reading. This course incorporates reading and analysis of informational selections to develop critical reading skills necessary for success in college courses. This course prepares students for successful completion of Florida college English language arts courses requiring extensive grade-level reading. The benchmarks reflect the Florida College Competencies necessary for entry-level college courses. III. COURSE OBJECTIVES: There are 26 Course Standards to be covered to includes, but not be limited to, the following: a. Successful reading of argument, including recognizing bias and supporting details b. Successful reading of fact and opinion, including recognizing inferences and main ideas c. Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of organizational patterns and their relationships in the comprehension of text, including recognizing purpose and tone of informational reading d. Successful understanding of vocabulary in context. Students can expect to: a. Read from longer text passages, as well as shorter ones when text is extremely complex. b. Complete close reading and rereading of texts central to lessons. c. Asking high-level, text-specific questions and requiring high-level, complex tasks and assignments. d. Support answers with evidence from the text. e. Providing extensive text-based research and writing opportunities (claims and evidence) in oral and written responses. IV. TEXTBOOK INFORMATION: Online ACT and SAT resources, newsela etc V. CLASS REQUIREMENTS: A. Register and participate in online activities via Khan Academy and other online prep B. Complete Diagnostics, Quizzes, Tests, and Exams C. Register and take the ACT Complete Assignments VI. GRADING POLICY: Overall grade is calculated using 70% daily grade and 30% final evaluations Student Grades can be viewed online at any time by visiting the high school website or typing in the direct link: https://gradebook.hendry-schools.org/pinnacle/piv Students are given a user name and password, parents can also acquire a username and password through the guidance office. VII. CLASSROOM POLICIES: A. Late policy-Makeup work is the students’ responsibility and must be completed within one week. B. Tardiness is counted on a daily basis. Students are expected to enter the class quietly and be in their seat. Additional tardiness will result in interventions from the office including after schoolwork detail, restriction of activities such as participation in class field trips, homecoming, prom, grad bash etc VIII.
