TierrafilmTM is a range of high grade compostable and biodegradable media ideal for multiple signage applications. Made of 100% cellulose, the micro porous surface creates vivid colour with a high image resolution. The Facts Materials to make: Plastic materials such as PVC/PP/PE are part derived from petroleum, a finite natural resource driving up prices at the pump and putting pressure on prices. Paper uses wood pulp to produce. The yield of an average tree is 3000ft2 of paper (4). At present over 40% of production is still virgin pulp and significant amounts still do not come from accredited sustainable forests, particularily in Asia. The Solution The TierrafilmTM range of substrates are 100% Oil free, made from cellulose (a renewable natural resource) sourced from 100% Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) approved forests, meaning what we take out, we put back. CO2 in manufacture: Making plastic film generates a lot of CO2, This excludes the CO2 generated by the oil industry in extraction and refining. It is estimated PVC emits 60 ounces of CO2 per kg of PVC manufactured. Polyethylene and Polypropylene are better but still emit 46 ounces and 50 ounces respectively (1). Therefore for every 11ft2 of 200mic of plastic produced, enough CO2 is emitted to drive a small car with two passengers between 3 and 4.5 miles (2). Paper is not much better with enough CO2 produced per 11ft2 of 100gsm to drive a small car with two passengers 2.2miles (3). All these figures are in developed economies, Indonesian and Asian estimates are 65 times higher (5). This excludes CO2 taken out the atmosphere during the growth of it’s raw materials, an added saving. Water in manufacture: Paper uses significant amounts of water in manufacture, a finite resource. In non water recycled manufacturing systems each 11ft2 of paper produced, 17 to 23 glasses of water are wasted, in water recycled systems ¾ to 1.5 glasses are wasted (6). The Solution The TierrafilmTM range of substrates don’t use water in manufacture. Meaning more glasses of water for your table. Volume of waste disposed: Most plastics have a short life span with 82% of HDPE/LDPE and 65% of PP disposed of in under 2 years. PVC is better as has longer life uses but over 30% still disposed of in under 2 years (7). These plastic degredation times are measured in 10’s and 100’s of years. A significant problem. Over 90% of paper has a short lifespan of less than 2 years and whilst widely recycled a significant amount is disposed of in landfill. In the UK 58% of all waste is landfilled, 8% is incinerated and only 34% recycled (8). US numbers are slightly worse. Putting this into perspective, each American throws away the weight equivalent of 2 Harley Davidsons, 1 straight to landfill. Plastic accounts for 15% of this total. Out of the remainder recycled, the majority is paper (30%), garden and organic waste (45%) and under 10% of the total is plastic. The average American throws his body weight in plastic away each year and recycles the weight equivalent of one of his arms (9). UK figures are not much better. However, there is still waste. Every 100ft2 of recycled paper produced generates between 0.1 and 0.5 ounces of solid waste and 0.5 to 2.5 ounces of sludge during the deinking process, or up to 8% of the weight of the recycled paper (10). Most ends up in landfill. Plastic recycling across developed economies is around 10%, with 90% still going to landfill (11). The Solution The TierrafilmTM range of substrates can be recycled in composting systems. This can be Aerobic or Anaerobic and the films degrade to Carbon Dioxide, Water, Biomass and Mineral Salts. Films comply with EN13432 and ASTM 6400 standards for disposal. The key element of these standards is over 90% degredation within a six month period. The TierrafilmTM range of substrates are suitable for use in incineration processes due to high calorific content. If the TierrafilmTM range of substrates are disposed of in Landfill they will degrade naturally overtime. Timescales are measured in years, not 10’s or 100’s of years. Summary There is no excuse, it is time to change to 1 2 3 3 4 TierrafilmTM– why? Reduce your carbon emissions. Reduce your water usage. Reduce your oil consumption. Reduce your waste generated. Reduce the amount of your printed material hanging around in Landfill for 100’s of years.
