HAMPSHIRE BADMINTON ASSOCIATION
INTER-DISTRICT KNOCK-OUT CUP COMPETITION
1. THE COMPETITION. The competition shall be a team event played annually, on a date or
dates and on a court or courts to be determined by the Competition Committee, between Districts.
2. ENTRIES AND FEES. An entry for the competition together with the agreed entry fee, which is
payable by the District Association; and a list of players and substitutes, shall be submitted to the
competition Secretary, by each District no less than 7 days prior to the date of the event.
3. ELIGIBILITY OF PLAYERS. No person shall play for the District in the Competition unless
that person has been registered with a club for the season immediately prior to the date of the
Competition and was not nominated for a county Team in the National League for the current
season, except at the discretion of the Competition Committee.
4. DRAW. The competition shall be conducted on a knock-out basis and an unseeded draw shall be
made by the Referee. Byes shall be drawn only when the number of entries is not a power of two
and then only in the first round.
5. PLATE EVENT. There will be a Plate event for first match losers if there are eight teamsotherwise only first round losers shall take part in the Plate.
6. MATCHES. Each match shall consist of 9 events viz; 3 Ladies’ Doubles, 3 Men’s Doubles and 3
Mixed Doubles. Each event shall comprise two games to 21 points. Setting will not be permitted.
Ends shall be changed after the first game . If an event shall not be completed for any reason, the
defaulting pair shall be awarded the number of points actually scored by them, (if any) and their
opponents shall be awarded 21 points. In the event of a simultaneous default by both pairs, each
pair shall be awarded the number of points that they actually scored (if any).
7. TEAMS. Each team in a match shall consist of 3 Ladies and 3 Men and each player shall
participate in 2 Ladies’ Doubles or 2 Men’s Doubles as appropriate, and 1 Mixed Doubles event.
8. RANKING. Each District shall rank its team members in order of playing strength for the
purpose of the Ladies’ Doubles and the Men’s Doubles events and each players shall participate
in the appropriate Ladies’ or Men’s Doubles as follows;
1st ranked players:
1st and 2nd Doubles events

2 ranked players:
1st and 3rd Doubles events

3 ranked players:
2nd and 3rd Doubles events
Pairings of team members for the purpose of the Mixed Doubles shall be at the
discretion of the District represented but each District shall rank it’s Mixed
Doubles pairings in order of playing strength and each pair shall play the
equivalent pair in the opposing team. This is subject to the case of substitution
under Rule 10.
9. TEAM LISTS. Each District shall, before the first round commences, hand to the
Referee a team list giving the names of its 6 team members, their ranking order
for the purposes of the Ladies’ and Men’s Doubles pairings, the ranking order for
the purposes of the Mixed Doubles evens and if desired, the names of not more
than 4 substitutes. No person whose name does not appear both on the District’s
entry form, under Rule 2, and on the District’s team list, shall play in the
Competition, subject to the Referee’s discretion. No team shall be altered after
being handed to the Referee except as provided by Rule 10.
10. SUBSTITUTES. Not more than 2 of the substitutes named on a team list shall
play in the Competition and no player once substituted, shall play in the
remainder of the Competition. Subject to this, players may be substituted as
follows:
a) During a match, only with the consent of the Referee, in the event of an injury to, or other
occurrence concerning a player which prevents that player from continuing to play, but a
substitute shall not play in any event in which the substituted player has commenced play.
b) Between rounds at the discretion of the District concerned provided that the Referee is
notified before the commencement of play in any round.
A substitute shall play in the events, in which the substituted player would have played, for the
remainder of the Competition.
11. TIMETABLE. Each team shall play at such time or times and on such court or courts as may
be specified by the Referee.
12.
ORDER OF EVENTS. Save in exceptional circumstances sanctioned by the Referee events in
all matches shall be played in the following order:
1. 1st Mixed Doubles
2. 2nd Mixed Doubles
3. 3rd Mixed doubles
4. 2nd Men’s Doubles
5. 2nd Ladies’ Doubles
6. 1st Men’s Doubles

9. 3rd Ladies’ Doubles
Players not ready to play when required by the Referee shall be deemed to be in
default under Rule 6.
13. PLAY. Events in all matches shall be played in accordance with the current Laws of
Badminton, as adopted by Badminton England, subject to Rule 6 hereof.
14. WINNERS OF MATCHES. The team scoring the greater number of points from the 9 events
in each match shall be declared the winner of that match, but if the total points be equal, then
the team winning the greater number of events shall be declared the winner.
15. DISPUTES. Disputes shall, according to the nature thereof, be submitted to the Referee, or, in
writing to the Competition Secretary. The decision of the Referee or the Competition
Secretary, as appropriate, shall be final.
16. WINNERS OF THE COMPETITION. The District whose team wins the final round of the
Competition shall be the winners and shall hold the Competition Cup (which shall remain the
property of the Association) from the end of the Competition until the commencement of the
Competition in the following season, and shall be responsible for the safe custody and return
thereof. This being subject to the requirements of the Association to retain the Competition cup
for valuation, repair etc.

awarded to the winning team of the First Round losers. Rule 16 applies to the Plate as well as the
