Physical Education - Year 9 Pathway
Overview of Subject
The Oasis Academy Shirley Park P.E. curriculum is designed to give students of all abilities the chance
to experience a wide range of sporting activities that will help encourage future participation and
enhance both enjoyment and excellence for all.
Through core P.E. in Key Stage 3, students have two hours per week. The activities are taught based
on the P.E. National Curriculum and have been adapted to suit our students' needs and cover a broad
range of topics that come under six main categories. These are:
• Outwitting Opponents - Rugby, Cricket, Badminton, Basketball, Rounders, Football.
• Developing Ideas, Concepts and Emotions - Dance based activities.
• Accurate Replication - Gymnastics and Trampolining.
• Exercising Safely and Effectively - Fitness based activities.
• Identifying and Solving Problems - Team building & Outdoor Adventurous Activities.
• Performing at Maximum Levels – Athletics.
Students' performances are assessed continually through an activity block and a final level is given and
shared with the students. An overall level is given at the end of the year based on an average score of
all activities.
The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
Are physically active for sustained periods of time
Engage in competitive sports and activities
Lead healthy, active lives.
What do I need?
• An enthusiasm for Health and Fitness and
Sport.
• The ability to adapt your knowledge and
physical skills to suit a range of sporting
activities.
• The ability to use your knowledge to analyse
performance.
• A emphasis on independent learning and a
desire to independently enhance your
physical skills.
• The ability to meet deadlines and manage
time effectively
• Literacy skills necessary to present written
ideas and create high quality coursework.

What will I learn?
Students will also begin to prepare for PE exam qualifications in Key Stage 4 from Year 9 with the
foundations of the GCSE/Cambridge National course being laid.
The emphasis on the Key Stage 4 P.E. curriculum is to help enhance an individual's confidence and
leadership skills and knowledge in health and fitness. Dependant on the pathway taken students will
have the opportunity to take on different roles within sport such as a performer, official, scorer, coach,
choreographer, dietitian or theoretical training and performance analysis.
Dependant on the pathway best suited, will change the topic areas that are learnt and completed over
the course of the qualification. However a solid foundation of sports performance will be understood
in both.

Pathway 1:
GCSE Physical Education:
Course Title: Physical Education
Exam Board: AQA
Qualification: GCSE
GCSE Physical Education provides students
with the knowledge and understanding of how
to live a healthy and active lifestyle, enabling
them to make informed choices about their
own physical development. Students can
choose from a variety of roles and activities in
which to participate in physical activity.
Students will learn how to analyse and
evaluate performance and suggest effective
plans for improvement.
How it is assessed?
Unit 3 (48903): Knowledge and Understanding for the Active Participant (Full Course)
Written Paper - 1 hour 30 mins
80 marks - 40%
Unit 4 (48904): The Active Participant (Full Course)
Controlled Assessment - 90 marks - 60%
4 assessments from a choice of selected sports as a player or performer.
From 2016 the AQA GCSE in PE will change to:

40% non-exam assessment (practical) with students assessed in the role of player/performer only.

Students will be assessed in three different activities: a team activity, an individual activity and a
third from either a team or individual activity.

60% written exam covering in depth knowledge of sport health and fitness.

Pathway 2:
Cambridge National in Sport Science:
Course: Sport Science
Exam Board: Cambridge National
Qualification: Cambridge National ½
This is a vocationally-related qualification that
takes an engaging, practical and inspiring
approach to learning and assessment. The new
Cambridge Nationals in Sport Science reflect
this and provide students with a broad
knowledge and understanding of different
aspects of sports science including sports
psychology and nutrition and equip students
with practical skills such as learning to design
and evaluate a training programme.
How it is assessed?
The Cambridge National route way is assessed 100% theoretically consisting of 3 course work units
and 1 unit based in Injury in sport assessed by a 1 hour exam.
Units include:
Reducing the Risk of Sports Injuries (1 hour exam)
Applying Principles of Training (Course work based)
The Bodies Response to Physical Activity (Course work based)
Sport Psychology (Course work based)
Sports Nutrition (Course work based)
Technology in Sport (Course work based)
Future Pathways
The GCSE and Cambridge National qualifications can open many opportunities, for further education
and jobs and careers in the sports and leisure industry.
Natural progressions from GCSE Physical Education and OCR Cambridge National in Sports Science can
be AS and A Level PE, BTEC Sport Level 3, Sports Science at University , PE Teaching, Physiotherapy.
