Math - Integers Unit Plan

Subject & Topic

Math – Integers

Students will be able to…

Recognize, understand and manipulate integers using addition and subtraction.

Rationale

Integers – positive and negative numbers, are a part of everyday life. It’s important that students have an understanding of integers and how they can be manipulated because they are present in a number of real world situations including banking.

Provincial Learning Outcomes

A6 Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of integers, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically.

Draft Curriculum

Big Idea: Understanding whole number addition and subtraction helps us make sense of and do these operations with fractions and integers.

Culminating Task

At the end of the unit the students will write a test to demonstrate what they have learned.

Resources

Red/Yellow Integer Tiles – will borrow from VIU

11 decks of cards

Math Power Textbook

Math Makes Sense Textbook

Worksheet (addition of integers)

Worksheet (subtraction of integers)

* Math pages will be marked in class together at the beginning of the following lesson

Lesson One – Integer Intro (30)

Outcomes:

SWBAT identify and understand integers

Activities:

Intro to integers – notes taken in Math Journal

Brainstorm: Where have we seen positive and negative numbers? (temperature, elevation, money)

Introduce the number line – give students their own number lines

Assign MP pg 61

Assessment:

Check to see Math Journal is completed

Mark homework together in the following class

Criteria:

Math journal is completed (Yes/No)

Homework mark will be recorded (has the student passed – yes/no)

Lesson Two – Comparing and Ordering Integers (30)

Outcomes:

SWBAT compare and order integers using a number line

1

Math - Integers Unit Plan

Activities:

Mark math from previous day – record scores

Math Journal: Compare temperatures (live from ipad weather) of five different places.

Plot them on the number line. Which are greater than 0 degrees? Order them from hottest to coldest.

Assign MP pg 63

Assessment:

Mark math homework the following class.

Criteria:

Student has passed (mark above 50%)

Lesson Three – Adding Integers

Outcomes:

Students will be able to manipulate integer tiles to solve an addition equation.

Activities:

Introduce Addition of integers using integer tiles

Solve problems together using integer tiles

Give problems for students to solve using integer tiles

Assign MP pg 119

Assessment:

Formative: Observations

Assessment of learning: Marking Math

Criteria:

Students are correctly manipulating integer tiles to arrive at the correct answer

Student has passed the homework (above 50%)

Lesson Four – Adding Integers

Outcomes:

Students will be able to solve addition equations without integer tiles.

Activities:

Brainstorm observations about addition of integers ( two positives = positive, two negatives = negative, positive and negative = the difference positive or negative)

Card Game – In partners, students will have one deck of card. The deck is split evenly between the two students. Black cards are positive; Red cards are negative. The students flip one card at a time. The first student to answer the equation correctly gets to keep the cards.

Worksheet – Practice Addition

Assessment:

Observation of card game

Mark Worksheet

Criteria:

Students are understanding and able to play the card game

Students can answer the worksheet correctly (pass)

Lesson Five – Subtracting Integers

Outcomes:

SWBAT manipulate integer tiles to solve a subtraction equation.

Activities:

Introduce subtraction of integers using integer tiles

Solve problems together using integer tiles

Solve problems individually using integer tiles

2

Math - Integers Unit Plan

Assign MP pg 121

Assessment:

Formative: Observation

Assessment of learning: Homework Mark

Criteria:

Observation: Students are able to solve subtraction equations using integer tiles

Student passed homework (50%)

Lesson Six – Subtracting Integers

Outcomes:

SWBAT solve subtraction equations without using integer tiles

Activities:

Brainstorm strategies for subtraction (positive minus positive = regular subtraction, negative minus positive is negative, positive minus negative is positive, negative minus negative is neg or pos)

Card game (same as previous but with subtracting)

Worksheet

Assessment:

Observation of game

Collect marks from worksheet

Criteria:

Students are able to subtract integers in the card game without using the manipulative

Students pass worksheet (50%)

Lesson Seven – Review and Pre-Test

Outcomes:

SWBAT understand and manipulate integers (addition and subtraction)

Activities:

Review Game (Whole class)

Give Pre-Test

Students can practice addition and subtraction by playing a card game with a friend if they are done the pre-test

Go over the answers of the pre-test (so that they can study at home with the right answers)

Assessment:

Formative – observation

Pre-Test Results

Criteria:

 Students are “getting it” during class game

All students successfully complete the pre-test

Lesson Eight – Test

Outcomes:

SWBAT demonstrate their learning from this unit on a test

Activities:

Test writing period

Assessment:

Summative – record marks

Criteria:

All students pass the test (some adaptations will be required)
