advertisement
No more than 3 students per team.
For each event, submit the following information:
Before Beginning: DESIGN PLAN
o Title Page (team name, logo, students, date)
o Purpose (reword event description from below)
o Design (sketch of device, label parts, and dimension)
o Gameplan (job roles and schedule, materials list)
After Testing: REPORT
o Title Page (team name, logo, students, date)
o Purpose (reword event description from below, past-tense)
o Design (sketch of tested device, label parts, and dimension)
o Results (score and place from competition)
o Reflection (What was good about your device? Bad? How would you do differently next time? What did you learn?)
EVENTS
Students will select 4 events, but will do so in order to have at least 3 teams competing per event.
1. Signaling Rocket
Using air and water as propellant, develop a rocket that will travel to the highest altitude.
Students may either construct their own launcher, or use the one made by the teacher.
Air will be supplied by a bike pump.
2. Electronic Signaling Device
Use the least amount of organic material (e.g., fruit) to construct an
electric power source and produce the most noticeable signaling device from 100 yards.
3. Solar Oven
Design and construct a solar oven out of recycled materials
to heat a test tube of water to the highest temperature.
Ovens must be portable to be setup outside by the teacher
in the morning, and returned in the afternoon.
Test tube must be accessible to measure by thermometer.
Maximum envelope for the oven is an 18” cube.
4. Hurricane Hut
Design and construct a hut to withstand hurricane-force winds, showing the
least amount of damage.
Hut must be made using natural organic material, and structured as a
residential living quarters.
Hut must be larger than a 12” cube, but smaller than an 18” cube.
Hut may be anchored to an underlayment.
Testing will be done using a leaf blower.
5. Critter Trap
Develop a self-activating trap to snare a moving critter in the quickest amount of time.
Trap must fit within an 18” cube, and made of recycled materials.
Trap must hold the critter, not the other way around.
An RC car will be used as the critter to be caught.
6. Plane Crash
Design and construct airplanes made of 8.5” x 11” copier paper and a paper clip for
the following events: farthest distance, longest hang-time, accuracy to hit a target,
and perform pre-determined tricks.
7. Float-a-Boat
Design and construct a boat using natural organic materials to hold the most mass without sinking.
The boat must fit within a 12” x 12” x 8” envelope, and float freely on water.
Masses will be added in 10 gram increments. SCORE = MASS HELD / MASS OF BOAT
