Merry Christmas!
Written by Alison Wilson with a little help from Clement Clarke Moore
Can you find all the Christmas hazards that face our furry friends at this time of year in the following
twist on a traditional Christmas poem. There are 9!
Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house,
A creature was stirring, but it wasn’t a mouse,
The stockings were hung by the chimney with glee,
The tinsel all carefully hung on the tree,
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of chocolate danced in their heads,
On the table was Santa’s treat – some mince pies,
And mum and dad had just closed their eyes,
When out on the lawn, arose such a clatter,
I tripped over the poinsettia to see what’s the matter,
Away to the window I travelled with ease,
All covered in ice, it needed antifreeze,
Down the stairs I ran, to the kitchen I rushed,
Turkey and stuffing aside, the back door I pushed,
When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick,
Not believing my eyes, a brandy I drain,
As he whilstled and shouted and called them by name,
Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer and Vixen,
On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and Blitzen,
Bless Dear St Nick, on seeing my drink,
Gave a packet of paracetamol, and left with a wink,
And I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Here are the 9…
Tinsel (and decorations in general) – can be very attractive toys for cats and dogs but can cause
obstructions and bunching up of the intestines if swallowed.
Chocolate–Chocolate contains a chemical, Theobromine, that dogs cannot process which can lead to
vomiting, tremors, and convulsions. Dark chocolate is the worst as it has the highest cocoa content.
Mince pies – and fruit cake can contain sultanas, raisins, currants and grapes which are all toxic to
dogs and can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea and kidney failure.
Poinsettias – can cause mild toxic signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea butany plants from the lily
family can cause severe kidney failure in the cat.
Antifreeze – Antifreeze has a sweet taste and contains ethylene glycol which is converted to a
severely toxic chemical causing irreversible kidney damage. The early signs are twitching and
sickness which can progress to seizures and death if not treated very, very early. Unfortunately even
pets found early may not survive.
Turkey – Bones and the carcassare more troublesome than meat from the bird as they can splinter if
chewed and cause constipation and perforation of the intestines. However, even giving your pet a
share of the Christmas dinner can lead to upset tummies and allergic reactions so best to stick to
doggie treats only.
Stuffing – Onions in stuffing, plus garlic and leeks (all part of the
Allium family) can lead to sickness and diarrhoea but can also
damage red blood cells leading to anaemia.
Brandy – (and any other alcohol) should never be given to a pet and
particular care should be taken if drinks are left on the floor by the sides of sofas etc. Alcohol can
lead to liver damage, dehydration, physical depression (causing breathing and heart rates to slow),
low blood sugar and kidney damage.
Paracetamol – In cats in particular can cause fatal liver failure and ibuprofen in both cats and dogs
can cause kidney failure so although they can help us get over an overindulgent Christmas day, they
should never be given to pets.
