Environmental Policy London Urban Arts Academy aims to support individuals, groups and communities to develop themselves through Arts Media and Youth Work. The business was established in 2009 through a passion for the arts combined with a desire to work with young people. We are present in nearly every borough of London and most people in the community music space know who we are, what we’re about, and have a highly regarded impression of the quality of our work and ability to engage the youth. Our aim is to provide opportunities for individuals and groups to access a range of arts and media workshops and training programmes regardless of their background or experience. Our mission is to provide broader learning, support and development programmes to young people, communities and the individuals and groups that support young people, raise the awareness of arts and media and tackle social exclusion. We are wholeheartedly committed to the principle of sustainability - Sustainability is about meeting our own demands without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The organisation is determined to make all efforts to improving environmental performance across all of our business activities, and will encourage our business partners and members of the wider community to join us in this effort. We believe that we have a responsibility to care for and protect the environment in which we operate. We recognise our key impacts to be in the areas of energy use waste generation transport We will strive to: Adopt the highest environmental standards in all areas of operation, meeting and exceeding all relevant legislative requirements. Minimise energy consumption through careful and efficient use of all equipment Encourage associates to adopt good environmental practice and encourage their involvement in environmental action. Continually assess the environmental impact of all our operations. We have developed an action plan to supplement our environmental policy objectives and will review our environmental performance and this policy annually. The undersigned is responsible for coordinating this policy, ensuring that sufficient and appropriate personnel and financial resources are made available and maintaining compliance as part of this annual review of our systems. We recognise, however, that progress requires the participation and commitment of all our staff to the policy, as well as the development of these procedures and structures. It is the responsibility of every member our team to apply our policy to make it a reality. Its application is also required from people who work with us. Our supporting Policy sets out the organisational framework within which all employees of the organisation must work and where appropriate the areas where detailed organisational procedures apply. London Urban Arts Academy Ltd Charity Reg No: 1159604 G5, Waterfront Studios, 1 Dock Road, London, E16 1AH 0207 511 7439 www.londonurbanartsacademy.org General Policy The London Urban Arts Academy will: o Aim to minimise the use of all materials, supplies and energy it uses o Minimise waste produced in all areas of the organisation, reuse and recycle waste where possible, and aim for waste-free processes o Aim to include environmental and ethical considerations in purchasing Waste reduction and re-use We use both sides of paper by printing draft documents on the back of paper which has already been used on one side Effective use of IT (including e-mail) prevents unnecessary printing and duplication (adjusting font sizes and margins to allow documents to fit onto one piece of paper, print preview prior to printing, thorough proofing of large print-runs before printing) We circulate or display non-urgent information, as opposed to printing copies. Compliance with legislation We comply with the Environmental Protection Act 1990 by keeping the building clear of litter and refuse, taking account of the statutory Duty of Care Energy and water consumption Use of energy efficient light bulbs Use of power-down features on electronic equipment General office environment Maintaining the office as a pleasant and effective working space Carrying out a weekly ‘housekeeping’ exercise and office tidy-out to prevent buildup of wastes Regularly service all office machinery to maintain optimum operating efficiency Implementing our Environmental Action Plan This strategy is by no means inclusive and there may well be other areas in which the company can improve and we will continually review this policy, within 12 months of the date below, or sooner, should circumstances require. In support of our Environmental Policy we have incorporated some simple steps to 'green the workplace' and have incorporated the following practices: Switch off all computer equipment, appliances, motors and machinery when not in use. If the workplace is too hot, turn the heating down instead of opening a window If it is too cold in winter, ensure radiators and heaters aren't obstructed and keep doors shut Check if lighting is on unnecessarily in the middle of the day If you are the last to leave, make sure you turn everything off behind you, including machinery, printers, drinks machines, fans, lights, etc. London Urban Arts Academy Ltd Charity Reg No: 1159604 G5, Waterfront Studios, 1 Dock Road, London, E16 1AH 0207 511 7439 www.londonurbanartsacademy.org Apply the three 'Rs': recycling is great, but reducing waste and re-using is even better. Print on both sides of paper, re-use envelopes, and think about ways of reducing other waste that is generated in the workplace. Reduce water use at work through raising awareness and simple adjustments to taps and toilets. Work together for a greener workplace - talk to your colleagues about working out solutions that will reduce our environmental impact To make sure that we continue to improve our Policy we will adopt the following actions – Create and publish a realistic environmental policy statement to provide evidence of our drive to develop a greener business Comply with all relevant legislation – in order to achieve this, we will research the Environment Agency website - http://www.environmentagency.gov.uk/business/142627.aspx to get together a list of the regulations that may apply to us – paying particular attention to our Duty of Care We will sign up to the Environment Agency email monthly environmental updates to keep up to date with environmental regulations and guidance that affects our organisation Confirm that all wastes from the office are collected, segregated and recycled Implement a new project to investigate how much we could ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’ – including items such as toner cartridges, paper and packaging wastes Complete a database of local suppliers and businesses for our ‘local’ supply chain Incorporate our environmental policy on our website and in our newsletter Consider a ‘green procurement’ policy, where we will investigate the purchase of products containing recycled material for office use The London Urban Arts Academy have an extensive induction and training programme for all employees and we will provide operational staff with bespoke environmental training at induction to ensure their full comprehension of the issues. In addition, we will continually monitor employee’s activities and provide additional training wherever necessary. Signature: David Williams Chief Exec Date: October 2014.
