This upper level course fits into an overall program of mathematics studies with a rigorous academic core by extending what students have learned in the introductory-- level mathematics courses as well as introducing more advanced topics. These advanced topics include linear equations, inequalities, and systems, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and rational functions, equations, and expressions. We will be doing some programming to enhance the Algebra II experience. It is a drag and drop programming language call Snap that was started by MIT as Scratch and updated by Berkeley to Snap. It is an online language so your students do not need anything special to do their programming except Google Chrome. The address is http://snap.berkeley.edu/snapsource/snap.html. You can expect an assignment every one to two weeks. Usually we will finish this in the computer lab. This can also be done on any Smart Device such as a pad, phone, etc. Edmodo is a secure website that allows students to turn in homework, to do quizzes and polls, get help with homework, talk with group members, communicate with their teachers, and lets parents view everything. As soon as all of the students register for Edmodo I will be emailing parents their access codes. I think you will love this website. I tried this on a couple of classes last year and it worked very well. This app. can be downloaded to any smart device or can be accessed by computer. Learn Zillion is a website that has videos for learning and practice along with quizzes. It is a very helpful site for both parents and students. You will find the parent handout and student notes and directions page on http://libertyunion.schoolwires.net/Page/5575. Students will have work here for every class. No particular model is required, but the TI-84 will be used for demonstrations. Smart phone, tablet, iPod, etc. is not required but extremely helpful. There is a downloadable app for both Emodo and Learn Zillion. We will be using these in class. It is advisable to have a notebook in which to keep lined paper, graph paper, class notes and handouts. A pencil is the preferred writing instrument. You may take class notes and do homework with an instrument of your choosing, but it is expected that you will do all tests and quizzes in pencil when in a written format. Class work & Homework In order to master most mathematical concepts or processes, practice is required. Homework is assigned almost every night to give you opportunities to practice. You should do the homework with the idea of engaging the concepts and doing the assignment well, not just to get it done. You should post your homework on Edmodo Organization is one of the keys to success for a student. Once you complete the assignments on Learn Zillion you must submit them to be posted. Each day will begin with a problem from the previous homework, which is to be completed within the first 5 minutes of class. Your next task each day is to check homework within your group (Groups are assigned the first day of class). We will discuss any problems that cannot be done by anyone in a group. While you are checking your homework within your group, I will visit each group to see that you have done your work. Each time you haven't completed your assignment, a zero (0) will be recorded. Beginning with the third zero and for every zero thereafter, one (1) point will be deducted from your quarter average. Grading: Each day your student will be reading the next section in the book and turning in a summary of that section the next class period. We will be going over this before the lesson begins. It is worth 5 in-class points. I will be checking homework on Edmodo during class. Work is graded by the following: Complete and Rational: 4 points Complete with explanation but is not rational: 3 point Complete without explanation 2 points Partially complete with at least ¼ correct 1 point Incomplete with less than ¼ correct or not turned in 0 points. Learn Zillion assignments are worth 4 points each but must be completed. No exceptions! I do not take late work. I do drop up to 3 homework assignments per quarter. Quizzes will be on Edmodo and worth 25 Points and will be prorated by correct answers. If quizzes are done early or on time the student will have an opportunity to retake their quiz. Quizzes on Learn Zillion will be worth 10 points each and will be prorated by correct answers. Tests will be done in the computer lab currently using Exam view Test Player. Each test is worth 100 points. I will be looking for the same rational (for each problem) as the homework. Test corrections can be done in class during lunch or posted office time. Test corrections consist of writing the problem and writing the correct answer with its rational. Page 4 of 5 Algebra II – Mrs. Kaddoura Please fill out the following in pen. Parent/Guardian Signature Date (Parent/Guardian please send an email confirming your signature) Student Signature Date This is due the next class period. Each student that turns page 7 on time will receive 5 extra credit points. Please remind your student not to turn in the whole document just page 7 please. Thank you for all of your support. Sincerely, Mrs. Kaddoura Page 5 of 5 Algebra II – Mrs. Kaddoura
