The Clinical Ethicist provides support in addressing, analyzing, and resolving complex ethical issues arising in the delivery and planning of health care. As part of the Clinical Ethics Service, the Clinical Ethicist develops collaborative relationships with team members, staff, physicians, and external stakeholders in enhancing the practice of ethical healthcare within Alberta Health Services (AHS). Responsibilities: Conduct and facilitate consultations to help address ethical issues arising in patient care and help to address moral conflict and distress. Assist in the review of policies, guidelines, and practices that have significant ethical implications. Assess the need for and plan, coordinate, and deliver ethics education and training to clinicians, support staff, administrators, patients, and families. Provide support for AHS and external initiatives that have significant ethical implications through participation on committees and task groups. Support the development of, and work collaboratively with, ethics committees, and other ethics resources within AHS to continually build organizational ethics capacity. Contribute passionately to the on-going development of a quality, high-performing, vibrant, responsive and visible Clinical Ethics Service through contributions to team, portfolio, and organizational planning and by identifying, coordinating, or supporting quality-enhancing initiatives. Build collaborative working relationships with other teams within the Quality Health Improvement (QHI) department and AHS towards achieving department and organization objectives. Provide mentoring, coaching, and inspiration to others within the organization to build a positive moral climate. This position is classified as P5 in the AHS Management & Out of Scope Salary Structure. All Management and Out of Scope positions are being reviewed for possible inclusion in the AUPE General Support Services bargaining unit. Clinical Ethicist Qualifications: At least one of an advanced professional clinical degree with specialized ethics training and experience, or Master's, or PhD in other relevant disciplines with practical clinical ethics training and experience. 3-5 years experience providing applied health ethics consultative services and health ethics education. Strong familiarity with health ethics literature and fundamentals. Knowledge of health systems and experience in clinical environments. Advanced proficiency in the use of systematic methods of reasoning to help analyze value conflicts by developing, weighing, and balancing moral arguments and counter-arguments. Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal work relationships. Skill and knowledge in techniques of mediation, facilitation, or conflict resolution. Outstanding verbal communication and presenting skills. Exceptional written communication skills. Ability to manage and prioritize complex and diverse workloads. Experience and proficiency in facilitation of group discussions over emotionally and morally charged issues. Track record in working with, and fostering the development of, highly effective teams working collaboratively in an atmosphere of trust and respect. Past success in identifying, supporting, and implementing workplace changes that enhance effectiveness and build ethics capacity. Understanding and skill at working within complex organizational environments. High level of maturity. Self-awareness of personal and intellectual biases. Predisposition to self-effacement. Ability to bracket personal for the sake of greater good in patient care, team, and organizational settings. Intellectual humility.
