Bishop E. Lane Davis Sermon Notes February 17, 2013 LOVE THAT HEALS Introduction: What is the Gospel? 1. As a result of Adam and Eve’s sin we suffer extreme consequences. a) Jesus came to forgive us, cleanse us and restore us to a relationship with the Father. But full redemption will not be complete until the resurrection Rom 8:23 Not only that, but we also who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body b) For now, we rely on God’s grace which is sufficient and abundant for our every need HEALING WATERS John 4:4-29 (cf. 13-14) Stress, depression, anxiety, fear, anger, disillusionment, hopelessness, self-doubt, loneliness; these are all words that describe the challenges that many people, even Christians face today. Many people today do not have a favorable outlook for their future. They can’t envision positive change so they feel they are stuck in their misery; their past is what defines them and there is nothing that they can do to alter their future. God’s word offers us a different picture. Our Sovereign Creator assures us of His presence, power and grace for the challenges we face. His Word teaches us while His Spirit guides us. Our faith and obedience to Him promises deliverance for us body, mind and spirit. Looking at this story I want to consider the source of healing. This woman represents so many whose lives have been brought to the point of desperation. She was religious, looking for the Christ, but led astray by false doctrines and dogma. She was taking advantage of every opportunity possible just to survive. Her situation resembles that of so many in the church today who are trying to do right but the obstacles they face seem insurmountable and they often turn to the world for answers. Observations: (1-4) “He needed to go through Samaria” a) Because of the groundswell of attention over His ministry Jesus left Judea to go Galilee. Being led by the Spirit He did not follow the normal route but sensed a need to “go through Samaria”. Note: Every encounter is a Divine appointment when you are led by the Spirit (5-14) She came looking for something a) She had a divine appointment. She came for one thing but experienced another because God determined that this was her day. Note: People in this life are wounded and only God can heal, comfort, and restore 1) Heal – make whole – body, mind and spirit – (“a new creation”) 2) Comfort – make peace with the truth – (accept the reality of your situation) Church of God Family Worship Center - 5841 East H Ave. - Kalamazoo, MI 49048 - 269-382-3502 Bishop E. Lane Davis Sermon Notes February 17, 2013 3) Restore – resume life with purpose and meaning – (moving on from your past situations) (15-20) Jesus ministered to her by exposing her true life condition and then revealing Himself as her healer – (“Go call your husband”) (21-29) The flood gate to living water is faith in the Christ – (vv 13-14) a) When she accepted Him as the Christ, healing waters began to flow in her life The healing waters are the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit John 7:37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive Isa 12:2 Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; ‘For YAH, the LORD, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.’” 3 Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Isa 43:20 The beast of the field will honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen. Isa 44:3 For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring Isa 55:1 Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance. 3 Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you Ezek 47:1-9 – Gives us a prophetic picture of the healing waters of the Holy Spirit (1-6) A prophetic picture a) The waters flow from under the threshold of the temple, from the presence of God Almighty Acts 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Acts 2:33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. b) As the waters flow they increase 1) From 120 to 3,000 to 5,000 Conclusion: (7) The waters bring fruitfulness – (the fruit of the Spirit) (8) The waters heal – (the gifts of the Spirit) (9) The waters produce abundance – (the favor of the Spirit) Church of God Family Worship Center - 5841 East H Ave. - Kalamazoo, MI 49048 - 269-382-3502
