Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Using NIBGE Animal House (NAH) Facility_
1. Rationale and purpose of the proposed use of animals for experimentation must be
justified.
2. Approval must be obtained on prescribed “Registration form” from animal house
committee before starting any experiment related to use of animal for research.
3. Approval of animal experiment(s) and/or use of NIBGE animal house will be granted
by the In-charge of NIBGE animal house facility and at least two committee members
after discussing the proposed experiments.
4. Experiment must be designed after discussion with any one of the committee
member of animal house committee NIBGE.
5. Each division interested to use NAH facility must be authorized/ depute a person(s)
involve in work related to NIBGE animal house facility to look after their animal’s
health, feeding, cleanliness as well as responsible for maintenance of facility during
and after the experimentations.
6. Only authorized users or their nominated person will be allowed to enter/visit
facility. No other person would be allowed to enter the facility without permission /
knowledge of animal house facility committee.
7. Authorized person make entry into the register for using/ entering the facility.
8. User of NAH facility will bear the cost of animals, their feeding and maintenance.
Also contribute in term of human and financial resources for maintenance and
smooth running of NIBGE animal house facility.
9. The Scientist /researcher /PI will be responsible to arrange/allocate necessary
resources (animals, animal feed, material etc) for the entire duration of the
experiment(s).
10. All users should wear personal protection material (e.g. gloves, mask, lab coat etc)
while enter and working inside the NAH facility and must be removed and hands
properly washed before leaving the facility.
11. Researcher must advice from incharge /committee members of NIBGE animal house
facility for the procurement of animals. The use of animals in research requires
healthy animals with known backgrounds.
12. Once animals are brought into NAH facility, they would be kept in quarantine for a
few days (as suggested by the NAH committee) to avoid contamination / spread of
any contagious diseases(s) in other animals in the facility. Any abnormal animal
behavior or condition will be immediately reported to the investigator and facility
manager
13. All users of the NIBGE Animal house Facility are required to keep daily record of
animals on the data form/animal husbandry form as provided by the incharge NAH
facility.

14. Daily observation of animals for any disease/unwanted symptom is required by the
user.
15. In case of abnormal animal behavior or severe disease develops into animal(s), these
should be immediately reported and removed from the experiment.
16. Feeding, bedding and cleaning of animals/cages should be done by all users/deputed
person as suggested by NAH committee /NAH technician.
17. No animal should be taken in or out without the knowledge/ permission of incharge,
NIBGE Animal house Facility.
18. All users new to animal experimentation are required to get basic skills for
handling/working with animals.
19. All accidents (bites, sharp cuts, fires) should be reported to in-charge, NAH Facility
and documented in a register maintained at NAH facility for this purpose.
20. After the completion of experiment, the user can donate un-used extra animals to
NAH Facility. However, users are responsible to remove/exterminate animals used in
their experimentation from NAH facility in consultation with the Incharge of the
facility.
21. Extermination and disposal of animals would be carried out as suggested by the
NIBGE Animal house Facility committee.
