Meiosis Brochure Project (50 points)
Meiosis and Reproduction
Unit Three
Introduction
For this unit, you will be doing a summative project that will describe the steps and importance of meiosis. You
and one other person in the class are going to walk through the provided daily tasks to gather knowledge on the
steps of meiosis and the unit learning objectives. Through the use of creditable websites, YouTube videos, or
any other media you choose to educate yourself through, you will become a master. You will then take the
knowledge you acquired and make an educational brochure for others. Your brochure will be used to educate
others about reproduction and meiosis and will become available in an OBGYN doctor’s office in Cincinnati,
OH. In addition, your final brochure can be used to replace a test through a verbal presentation to Ms. Lykens.
Unit Learning Objectives
1. Compare and contrast the processes and results of sexual vs. asexual reproduction.
2. Recognize that individuals can be very difference from one another, even though they are all descended
from a single cell and thus have essentially identical genetic instructions.
3. Explain how the sexual recombination of genes is a result of independent assortment and segregation.
4. Explain how genes can be recombined in sexual reproduction and meiosis.
5. Explain how crossing over causes a variance in traits of the offspring of two parents and contribute to
evolution.
Daily Tasks
Daily tasks must be checked off by Ms. Lykens daily. She will make sure you are grasping the content and that
your information is correct. Check with Ms. Lykens often to make sure you are getting the right knowledge. If
you are reading a source and find a lot of words you don’t recognize, check with Ms. Lykens.
Making the Brochure
To begin, pick one of the three templates from the class website. You will be designing this brochure with your
partner—there is no right or wrong way to do this! The goal of the brochure is to incorporate all of the
knowledge you have gained over the next four/five days into a complete informational brochure. Make sure
that you are just not copying the information, but that you actually understand it! On Friday, your group will be
given a quiz to complete for part of your brochure points.

Monday: Project Tasks (5 points)
Sexual Reproduction
 What two cells are involved in sexual reproduction?
 What is the end product of sexual reproduction?
 How many organisms are required for sexual reproduction?
 What types of organisms reproduce sexual (ex. Mammals, etc.)
Asexual Reproduction
 What is the end product of asexual reproduction?
 How many organisms are required for asexual reproduction?
 What is binary fission?
Haploid vs. Diploid
 What is a haploid cell?
 What is a diploid cell?
 What type of cells have half the number of chromosomes?
 In asexual reproduction, what type of cell(s), haploid or diploid, do these organisms have?
 In sexual reproduction, what type of cell(s), haploid or diploid, do these organisms have?
Chromosomes and Genes
 Draw a chromosome.
 Draw homologous chromosomes.
 Draw replicated homologous chromosomes.
 What is a gene?
 Genes code for what?
 Does each gene code for the same thing?
Meiosis
 What is meiosis?
 What is the end product of meiosis?
 In meiosis, you go from a __________ (diploid/haploid) cell to a __________ (diploid/haploid) cell.
 How does the number of chromosomes change in meiosis?
Summarize the following information into an informative paragraph. This will serve as a rough draft for
