Sandersville Historic Walking Tours “Sandersville Walks” By: Taylor Sims In 2013, the Sandersville Downtown Development Authority joined forces with the University of Georgia’s Archway Partnership to promote healthy lifestyle while also promoting citizen and visitor tourism in downtown Sandersville. Historic Tourism had been identified through multiple avenues as an asset needing further development in Sandersville and Washington County. The idea for the multifaceted project came about from collaboration between the Sandersville Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and the Historical Society. The DDA wanted to create a fitness walking trail in the downtown area while the Historic Society wanted to do a walking trail highlighting downtown historical sights. ARCHWAY PARTNERSHIPS WASHINGTON COUNTY SANDERSVILLE, GA From this “Sandersville Walks!” was created to bring all collaborative effort together into one program the city of Sandersville can offer to tourists, school groups and for people seeking out new exercise routines. The plans, developed by Mario Cambardella, a master of landscape architecture candidate at the University of Georgia, will entail a series of different walking trails some focusing on fitness and others indicating points of interest ranging from architecture, to shops, to trees and other historic landmarks. With the historical trails, points of interest include the Brown House, the old jail and the old cemetery, just to name a few. Washington County Archway Professional, Kim David, has led a team making great strides on this initiative by facilitating meetings, creating citizen-based committees and assisting development of the program’s plans. A unique partnership was developed for this program between the Washington County Historical Society, the theatre department at Georgia College and the UGA Lamar Dodd School of art to help create these historic walking tours. In addition, Mrs. David has worked toward expanding museum operation hours to include weekends, which has led to an increase in visitors to two Washington County’s tourism based assets. The self- guided walking tour program, “Sandersville Walks!”, will serve to increase the number of visitors to Sandersville’s downtown.
