Safety Vision Statement
The Luther Burbank High School staff is committed to providing a friendly environment
that will allow for the total academic, emotional, social, physical, and cultural
development. We believe that all people excel in an environment that is safe, and offers
unlimited opportunities for continuous growth and personal success. We believe that all
people should be accountable and that all students can learn in a positive environment.

School Climate – COMPONENT 1
Create a “caring and connected” school climate in a safe and orderly environment.
Design this component around organizational and interpersonal processes that occur in and
around the school, i.e., structures, procedures, and organization. The traits students, teachers,
administrators, and other personnel bring to the campus (ethnic/cultural diversity,
experiences). Focus on the general atmosphere or spirit of the school (norms, beliefs, and
values).

OUR GOAL IS: What broad area will we focus on in the near future to accomplish our mission
and safety vision? LBHS will provide an educational environment in which all students are
able to feel and be safe.
OBJECTIVE 1-1:
By June 2014, there will be a decrease in school related suspensions and
behaviors leading to suspensions.
1. Related Activities:
We believe that the recidivism rate will drop dramatically through student and
staff training and implementation of conflict resolution techniques.
2. Resources needed:
Student/Staff handbooks and or manuals, Conflict resolution mediator

By June 2014 there will be a decrease in anger related conflicts resulting
in referrals and suspensions.

By June 2014 LBHS will continue to provide a safe and welcoming after
school environment for students to interact and or continue their
learning process.

SLC related activities, Spirit Week and similar activities, after school sports,
tutoring, enrichment classes, 7th period classes, clubs, leadership, library.

School’s Physical Environment – COMPONENT 2
Create a physical environment that communicates respect for learning and well-being of all
individuals on campus.

OUR GOAL IS:
LBHS will increase the safety of all students and staff by improving its
“CLOSED CAMPUS” rule.
Objective 2-1
By June 2014 all entrance and exit points to LBHS will be under more
strict observance by hall monitors, administration and staff.
1. Related Activities:
Ensure the safety of all staff and students by performing a vulnerability study
and designing adequate response. Frequent reminders for students and staff
regarding policies.

Police Department and Fire Department, school staff

Objective 2-2
By June 2014 the East parking lot will be striped for parking and
direction of travel. It will also be visibly marked at the entrance as
STAFF PARKING and prohibiting student drop off.
1. Related Activities:
Post new signs, such as “Staff parking only” ,“No student drop off” , “Pull to side
and park for pick up and drop off”. Create a safer environment for students and
staff as they enter and exit school by lowering the traffic congestion and
improving pedestrian flow. Monitor lot, access, and Luther Drive during drop off
and pick up times (before and after school).

Objective 2-3 By June 2014 the Crisis Response Procedures of LBHS will be honed and refined
to include updated procedures involving violent intruders.
1. Related Activities:
Design a Safety program unique to the needs of LBHS, instruction/training for all
staff regarding updated procedures for violent intruders. Review procedures to
keep all updated.
2. Resources needed:
Police Department, Fire Department. Updated materials for staff for dealing
with violent intruders.
