Boys and Girls~
I’m writing to ask your help. You know me as a bear that is squeezable,
fruity, and good to eat. I’m looking for more in life though! I want to be
fierce and respected like the polar bear. To become a member of the Polar
Bear Club I need to get my feet wet. I’ve never been swimming though!
Could you help me out?
I’m going to test my water skills by getting in water for three hours, twelve
hours and for one last test I’ll try twenty-four hours. At the end of each
time frame, I will evaluate how well I handled the water. In the end I’d like
you to tell me whether you think I could handle life as a polar bear.
Thanks for all your help!

Going Gummy!
Objective: Apply the scientific method and the SI system of measurement to investigate
a problem.
You will apply the scientific method to determine how a gummy bear’s measurable
properties are affected by soaking the bear in water for different amounts of time.
Use the correct lab report format to demonstrate the following skills:





Identify all the experimental components of this lab
Describe the tools and techniques necessary to measure the mass, volume, and
density of irregular shaped objects using the SI system of measurement.
Use charts to organize your data in a meaningful way.
Use graphs to illustrate your data.
Write a detailed analysis to explain how mass, volume, and density relate to the
gummy investigation.
Tips to remember for each portion of your lab report:
 Problem: Write it in the correct question format.
 Hypothesis: Use the correct format to express your prediction.
 Procedure: Identify your parts of the experiment (independent variable,
dependent variable, constants, control) and explain how you measured mass,
volume and density (include tools & procedures).
 Data/observations: Show your data in chart and graph form. You should
show calculations for volume & density within the appropriate columns of your
data table.
 Analysis: Write a thorough analysis of what happened to your gummies after
soaking in water. Describe what happened to the mass, volume, and density of
the bears as they sat in water for different time lengths. Support your statements
with proof from your data.
 Conclusion: Write a response to Gum E. Bear explaining whether you think he
can live the life of a polar bear. Remember to explain what happened to the
gummies’ mass, volume, and density as they soaked in the water. Develop an
explanation for why the mass, volume, and density changed the way that they
did. Use your data to explain how the composition of the gummies changed over
time. In addition, tell Gum E. whether he’ll still have his fruity flavor. Make this
determination without actually tasting them. Support your answer with your
findings.

Measurements, when required, are accurate and show proper units.
5
Calculations, when required, are clearly shown and accurately
calculated.
5
Data is clearly recorded and organized properly in a table.
10
Appropriate graph is chosen. A separate graph is made for mass,
volume, and density.
5
Axes are accurately labeled. Increments are consistent.
5
Mass, volume and density are properly plotted.
5
Analysis accurately describes the change in mass, volume, and
density over time.
5
Analysis statements are supported with evidence from your data.
5
Conclusion is written as a letter to Gum E. Bear, and clearly states
whether he can live the life of a polar bear based upon your
findings.
5
Conclusion provides reasonable explanations to account for the
change in mass, volume and density. The fruity flavor is
addressed.
5
Conclusion answers the problem and is supported with evidence
from data.
