ICAR- Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Port Blair 744101, Andaman & Nicobar Islands Model Training Course on “Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) for Tropical Island” (2-9 November, 2015) Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India lies in the Bay of Bengal at a distance of over 1200 km from the main land. Agriculture in the islands is of about 150 years old and is practised on about 50, 000 ha in post-tsunami (2004) times. Plantation crops (coconut & areca nut) accounts for about 60% of agricultural land use. Annual arable crops of rice (kharif), vegetables (rabi) and minor fruit crops cultivation account for the rest of the land use. Livestock (dairying, poultry / duckery, piggery and goatery) feeding on the crop residues and on community grazing lands (including forests) does provide additional income to the farmers. The vast coastal region provides enormous opportunities for fishing in the shallow and deep water of the Indian Ocean. Of late, there is increased interest in fresh water aquaculture too. As single farm enterprise based livelihoods encounters severe risks, a combination of farm enterprises (crop, livestock, poultry, fisheries, mushroom culture, vermicompost etc) have been tested to minimize the risks while bringing in continuous increase and stability to farm profits. In this context, research efforts were initiated at ICAR- Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Port Blair since its inception on 23 June, 1978 to arrive at the optimum income from individual farm enterprises. Since the start of current century, farming systems research integrating the profitable farm enterprises identified above has been done. The training programme is aimed at sharing the research and on farm experiences of farming systems research in plantation and rice crop based systems. The multi-disciplinary research team of crop, animal and fisheries scientists of the institute serve as resource persons for this model training course. This training course is sponsored by Directorate of Extension, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, New Delhi.
