St John`s Way Medical Centre nEWSLETTER – AUTUMN 2013

WELCOME
To our GP trainees, Dr Claire Rees and Dr Grace
McGeoch who joined the SJW team in August.
Dr Mubeen Iqbal joined us at the beginning of
November and is a fully qualified Foundation Year 2
(FY2) doctor working at our practice for 3 months to
gain experience in a GP surgery. Dr Miranda Mylne
is also a Foundation Year 2 (FY2) doctor, who will
join us at the beginning of December and is on a 4
month placement.
SPOTLIGHT ON JACK ROSE
I joined the SJW team in February in
2013 as Assistant Practice Manager.
My background is management in the Merchant
Navy working aboard cruise ships around the world
and more recently I spent 2 years in the education
industry working in management of an English
Language School in central London. Although I am
used to working in ever changing and challenging
environments nothing could prepare me for my
‘leap’ into Primary Healthcare! From day one I
realised that there was an encyclopaedia of
knowledge to learn, not to mention the wonderful
world of medical terms. But, I can honestly say that I
haven’t looked back, every day is busy, challenging
and at SJW you never know what is coming next.
This keeps myself and indeed all staff on our
toes….just how I like it.
As the Assistant Practice Manager I need to be able
to think on my feet and troubleshoot at a moments
notice and I think the key phrase I would use in my
day to day life at SJW is Multi-Task! I did think about
listing some of the duties that I perform in the
surgery but I think I can cover it in a sentence…. “If it
happens in the surgery then I will have some part to
play in it!” We have all just completed our
Chaperone Training in the practice, so if you would
like one of us as a professional chaperone in the
room with you when having an examination you just
need to ask. Daily life is never dull at SJW and I am
looking forward to many happy years here.

SHINGLES INFO
This year we are providing a
Shingles Vaccination program
for our patients aged 70 & 79
years of age. This is in line
with recommendations from
NHS England.
If you were aged 70 or 79 on
1st September 2013 please
call the surgery and tell the
receptionist you would like to
book a Shingles vaccination
with one of our Practice
Nurses.
What is Shingles? It is an
infection of a nerve and the
skin around it. It is caused by
the herpes varicella-zoster
virus, which also causes
chickenpox. Shingles
usually affects a specific area
on either the left or right side
of the body. It causes a
painful rash which develops
into itchy blisters. Most
people feel unwell for several
days before the rash appears.
What causes shingles? Most
people have chickenpox in
childhood, but after the
illness has gone, the virus
remains dormant (inactive) in
the nervous system. The
immune system (the body’s
natural defence system)
keeps the virus in check, but
later in life it can be
reactivated and cause
shingles.
It is not known exactly why
the shingles virus is
reactivated at a later stage in
life, but it may be due to
having lowered immunity
(protection against infections
and diseases).
CARING FOR PATIENTS WITH DIABETES
This year we have changed the way that we review patients with diabetes and in addition we are inviting patients in for a
review who may be at risk of developing diabetes (patients who have had a higher than usual blood glucose (sugar) test
result). The process is different for each category so we thought we would clarify the processes.
Patients at risk of developing
Diabetes or had Gestational
Diabetes in a past pregnancy
Standard Diabetic Patients
We will write to you inviting you to make
a double appointment with a Health Care
Assistant or Nurse.
The review appointment will include
 Lifestyle
review,
including
smoking status, diet and exercise
habits, alcohol screening etc
 Blood glucose measurements
 Weight and BMI measurements
 Cholesterol check
 Blood pressure
 Pulse check
We may also give you a blood form to
have tests done if you have not had a test
recently.
This is a two stage review, we will write to
you asking you to book a double
appointment with a Health Care Assistant or
Nurse.
Stage 1 – First appointment
Please bring an early morning sample of
urine. You will also have the same review
questions and tests as the first column and
sent for a blood test if you have not had one
recently.
The results will be reviewed and you will
only be contacted if we need to see you
again.
Once we receive your blood results we will
send you a letter containing all your results
and a care plan. This will enable you to
think about your results and what you
would like to talk to the GP about at your
Stage 2 appointment – please fill in as much
of your care plan as you would like prior to
the appointment and remember to bring it
with you. Book a double Stage 2
appointment with a GP.
Stage 2 – Second appointment
Your GP will discuss with you your results
and look at your care plan to agree a way
forward for you to manage your condition.
The whole process with be repeated yearly.
