TECHNICAL PROTOCOL ON FISHERY POND IMPROVEMENT

As per Agro Climatic Zone the practices for improvement of fishery pond has some differences. MKSP project is going to implement mainly in Lower Brahmaputra Valley Zone & North Bank Plain. In this protocol the practise for improvement of fishery pond will be discussed as per the Agro Climatic Zones. a) Improvement in the pond management:

There are 2 management practices generally adopted for table fish production. These are:

1.

Pre-stocking management and

2.

Post stocking management

MONTH ACTIVITIES EXPECTED COSTING REMARKS

Required improvement during Pre-stocking

Pumping the water, the whole pond has to be dried and the sediment (Silt) have to be removed from the pond. After that the pond has to be exposed to the sun at-least for one month. It will also clear all the unwanted fish and aquatic weed.

Rs. 1500-2000 /- per

Bigha.

The cost may vary according to the depth of water.

DEC-FEB

FEB-MAR

MAR-APR

In North Bank Plain the Seepage of water is high so in that zone the pond will automatically dry. For better water holding capacity a thin layer of 20-30 cm of clay and cow dung mixture has to be given on the top soil of the pond. The mixture of

Clay and cow dung should be 9:1. The clay has to be locally sourced.

Rs. 10000-12000 /- per Bigha

This cost may vary place to place.

Pond side has to be cleaned and repaired.

All the grass and small plants/weeds should be removed.

Rs. 400-Rs. 600 /- per

Bigha

Labour Cost.

Per bigha apply 250kgs of cow dung. After applying the cow dung, the pond bed should be ploughed properly.

Rs. 2000 /- per Bigha

This is the total cost of cow dung and ploughing.

ACTIVITIES EXPECTED COSTING REMARKS

Maintain the slope of the pond side as per soil texture.

Rs. 250 /- per Bigha

Refill the pond in the month of April. The refilling needs to be done upto 3-4 ft. of water. If refilling is done through natural rainfall then it will take more time.

Rs. 2000-3000 /- per

Bigha.

In case of refilling the water through rainfall there is no cost.

3-4 days after refilling apply 50 kgs of lime per bigha. The lime is applied to clean the water and reduce the acidity of water. In

Assam the acidity of water is higher than the optimum required for fisheries. Thus application of lime is must for better growth of fish. The lime also helps to kill various types of insects which are harmful for the fish seeds.

Rs. 500 /- per Bigha

It may vary according to the pH status of the water.

4 hours after applying the lime, netting of the entire pond needs to done for 2-3 times. The netting is done to clear the insects which have been killed by the lime.

After netting keep the pond vacant for 24 hrs.

Rs. 500 /- per Bigha Labour Cost.

Required improvement during post stocking

JUN-FEB

JUN-AUG

Total Cost

Lime needs to be given every month in the ratio of 20kg per bigha for preventive mechanism. If liming is properly done then the chances of disease is very less.

Rs. 2000 /- per Bigha

Drainage system and perimeter netting Rs. 2000 /- per Bigha

Rs-11150-12850 /- per Bigha

Labour and Material cost.

Note:

The second row in the above is important in North Bank Plain Zone and those who want to improve the pond from that Zone through coating of clay and mud mixture can avail the MKSP loan only for that purpose.

The total in the above table is done excluding the value in the second row.

The average fish production per bigha in Assam is 1300 Kg. With these improvements in the fishery pond the production will be 2500 Kg to 3000 Kg per Bigha which is approximately equal to the National

Average.

The farmers who are maintaining the pond with the above system can also improve the pond area for integrated farming linking with Poultry Production or Pig production. There are different model of integrated fish farming. The best possible option in integrated fish production is the fish farming with duckery. The reason is that duck will control the insects in the pond.

The investment cost for integrated fish production with duckery is as given in the following table. The investment is for per bigha of fish production-

ACTIVITIES

Construction of Duck raise house

Procurement of 40 Ducks

EXPECTED COSTING REMARKS

Rs. 15000/-

Rs. 8000 /-

Rs. 23000 /-

This house is suitable for 40 to 45 ducks and these no of ducks are the maximum no for one bigha of fishery.

Male female ratio is

1:4.

Total

Note:

The total investment cost is the maximum cost per bigha of fish farming.

The incremental income for the intervention of duckery with fish will enhance the income of the farmer as given below-

Total egg production per year from 40 ducks is (30X 250)

Income from Eggs

= 7500 Numbers

= Rs. 37500 /-

Income from Ducks meat = Rs. 6000 /-

Total Income = Rs. 43500 /-
