Botox for facial dental aesthetics in the dental practice Lecture: To introduce botox (botulinum toxin) to dentists and encourage the use of botox in their dental practice. Participants will learn the history, pharmacology, physiology and understand the different properties of the various commercial preparations of botox available and to use them selectively. To treatment plan facial dentally for all patients – the aging skin and functional anatomy of the facial muscles and neck as it relates to formation of wrinkles will be discussed. As always case selection will be of paramount importance and the customized goal for each patient must be to enhance their facial aesthetics for a targeted freshened, rejuvenated appearance with no or adverse events. Therefore a systematic analysis of the facial muscles, skin and bone at rest and in function is first determined, recorded, their severity and topography noted and a final achievable targeted endpoint agree upon with patient. Multiple clinical cases shown will support the effective use of botox in the upper, middle and lower face with emphasis on issues in the perioral region. Literature support, existing rules and regulations on the use of botox will be presented. Hands-on Workshop for Botox: limited attendance This workshop is only for dentists who have no experience with Botox but are eager to learn and integrate new treatment modalities in their practice. Participants will learn how to identify cases that can be managed by botox, elicit contraction of muscles so as to assess the severity, risks and set achievable goals - be able to use the different injection techniques, dosages, dilution etc and will attain desired results consistently, safely. An attitude of anticipating adverse events at all stages will be emphasized. Participants who diligently participate in the workshop will practice botox injection and be able to inject botox to soften frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet, nasal scrunch, gummy smile, pebbly chin and masseter hypertrophy at the end of course. An understanding of the management of any complications and strategies to soft market botox to existing patients will give participants confidence to start botox use in their practice after the course. A written test will be conducted at the end of workshop. Those who pass will be awarded a Certificate of Competency in Botox for facial dental esthetics by the Asia Pacific Dental Federation’s International College of Continuing Dental Education. 6
