“Inverse Problems in Oil Exploration and Medical Imaging”
Abstract:
The mathematics of oil exploration and medical imaging leads to inverse problems for the
wave equation such as the recovery of the non-constant speed of the wave equation from the
boundary values of special solutions of the wave equation. We will model some of these
problems, give a brief description of the techniques used to solve some of these problems,
and state some open problems. The talk will be directed to an audience with exposure to the
solution of the constant coefficient wave equation in one and three dimensions.
