Covenant Highlights United Covenant Church Volume 35, Issue 1 November 2014 PASTOR’S CORNER November is the month that we set aside for Thanksgiving. One of the things I am thankful for is our Bible Camp, Lake Beauty. Bible Camp plays a very significant role in the Christian growth and discipleship of our young people. That is why as a church we are very committed at making sure every child or young person, who wants to go to camp, gets the opportunity. As I think back to my youth, I was privileged to attend Lake Beauty. It was there that I was challenged to commit my life to Christ. Although I was not at camp when I rededicated my life to Jesus, I know that my time at Lake Beauty was extremely significant in that process. I will be eternally grateful. Sunday, November 9th is being set aside by the churches in our district as Lake Beauty Kingdom Investment Sunday. The ministry of Lake Beauty has been growing over the past several years. Solid Rock, a one-year discipleship school is in its first year. I can’t begin to say how excited I am about the quality discipleship the young people who are attending there are receiving. Lake Beauty is increasingly in demand as a retreat and camping center by many different groups. In short, more and more ministry is happening at Lake Beauty and as a result more meeting space is needed. An addition to the current-dining hall was approved at Lake Beauty’s recent annual meeting. The building will cost about $600,000. Our goal is to raise that money before December 31st of this year. If every church does its part this is very doable. Pray and consider what you can give to this important project. It truly is an investment in the Kingdom of God through Lake Beauty’s ministry. Pastor Dan Pearson A YOUTH MOMENT As I sit looking out my window, the last of the leaves are falling from the trees and blowing into a spectacular sight. There is something very peaceful about fall and its transition into (dare I say it??) winter. Though the world appears as if it is dying, we know that it is really preparing for a season of new life in the spring. Sometimes life is like that, especially the lives of our young people. Outwardly, it may feel or look like certain seasons or experiences are coming to an end, whether we want them to or not. But the reality – God’s reality – is that in every transition, in every change, in every struggle, He is working to bring about new life. November is also the month of Thanksgiving! Social Media will soon be filled with 30 days of thankfulness as people recount the blessings they may have taken for granted the rest of the year. Today, I am thankful for God’s reality. The reality that no matter what it may look like outside (be it the weather or be it life) God is at work; always faithful and always bringing new life. CALENDAR SALES: The youth are still selling wall calendars, pocket and wallet calendars as well as blank greeting cards. If you are interested in purchasing a beautiful wall calendar, they are $8 a piece or 2/$15. This year we are pre-ordering our calendars to cut down on waste. You can pre-order on the sign up sheet outside of Heidi’s office. The last day to order is November 12th. Calendars will arrive before Thanksgiving and payment is due at time of delivery. They make great Christmas presents and, as a bonus, are useful year round All proceeds will go to the CHIC account to help send our young people to the Tri-Annual ECC Youth Conference held in 2015. COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING SERVICE: Once again, United Covenant is honored to host the Community Thanksgiving Service on Wednesday, November 26th @ 7 p.m. The Youth will be singing a song as part of our contribution to the overall service. Please plan to attend this wonderful multidenominational service! LOOKING AHEAD: The Mighty OAKS Christmas program will be held on Sunday, December 14th during our regular worship service. Please make sure to invite family members to this wonderful event! Our High School Helpers will also have a role in the program! December 21st will be an all youth Christmas celebration during the Education Hour and will also be the last day of Sunday School until January 11th. The month of November and December are intentionally quiet for the youth. I want our young people to learn the art of stillness, of thankfulness and of expectation. The next two months bring great transition to our world as the leaves die away and the snow begins to fall. Our lives often seem to be in constant transition as well. But it in all, may we always remember that no matter what may be happening on the outside, God is at work, always faithful and always bringing new life. Always within His Grace Heidi Williamson Director of Youth and Family Ministries jhdawilliamson@gmail.com 715-410-017 LITTLE LAMBS Little Lambs will be hosting their “Thanksgiving Meal” for the Little Lambs children/families on Wednesday, November 26th at 11:15 a.m. We are looking for anyone that is interested in helping in the kitchen (cooking/serving/clean up). Please have your boxes here by November 16th. AVA AVA Domestic Abuse Awareness Event Sunday, November 2nd Women’s ministry is standing out in the Northwest Conference and community to help shed light on the evils of domestic abuse through the Advocacy for Victims of Abuse ministry, also known as AVA. Did you know that 1 in every 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime? 30 to 60 percent of perpetrators of intimate partner violence also abuse children in the household? According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults Please join us Sunday, November 2nd at 2 p.m. to hear from Robin, a courageous woman who will tell her heart-tugging story of domestic violence, her journey toward healing… and what we can do to help others in her difficult circumstance. In a recent interview Robin said, “because of the domestic abuse from my abuser, I couldn’t collect the mail, wasn’t allowed to purchase medication that was prescribed for me, I had no access to the family funds, no means of transportation, no computer access or cell phone, and our home phone was going to soon be turned off. Domestic violence has affected our family like a terminal disease…” Robin wants to tell her story so that it will offer hope… and help for others. We hope that you will join us Nov. 2nd. Please contact Tami Linden 715-263-3563 or Cindy Mohrland 715-948-2153 if you have any questions. Childcare will be available. NEW!!! MBC MINISTRY! MBC ministry, which stands for meals, babysitting, and cleaning, is a new ministry within our church that provides temporary help to those in need during tough times. This ministry is in existence for times such as: the arrival of a new baby; injuries or surgeries; extended illnesses; welcoming or saying goodbye to a neighbor; military deployment; condolences; etc. In Romans 12, it speaks of the "...different gifts, according to the grace given us...If a man's gift.is serving, let him serve...if it is encouraging, let him encourage, if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously..." We all take our turn in life when we go through stressful times, and there are several people in our church family gifted with service and giving who could use those gifts with purpose, meeting those realistic needs. For those of you who feel led to be a part of this ministry, just contact me. Please specify whether you would like to be on the list for providing meals, babysitting, cleaning, or all of the above. I would like to mention that providing meals could mean a homemade meal, restaurant take-out food, or even a gift certificate. Anything is helpful! *Finally, I know a couple of people with cancer. Life seems short in our “earthly” eyes, so pray that they, their family and others close to them will be mindful of the glory we are to bring to our creator God, redeemer Savior- in this world and the next. The tricky part of this ministry is the communication. I am completely dependent on not only those involved in this, but also the whole church. I would love to ask for everyone's help in making this ministry inclusive, so please don't hesitate to let me know whenever you hear of someone in need, and I'll make sure to connect with them. There were no needy people among the believers in Acts 4. That is a perfect example of how a community can be united and bless those around them. I came across this blog on Facebook and was so moved by it I felt it was worth sharing. We have such an amazing church family with wonderful programs for our children/youth I know we echo this woman’s opinion. Dear Parents With Young Children in Church You are doing something really, really important. I know it's not easy. I see you with your arms overflowing, and I know you came to church already tired. Parenting is tiring. Really tiring. I watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby quiet, juggling the infant car seat and the diaper bag as you find a seat. I see you wince as your child cries. I see you anxiously pull things out of your bag of tricks to try to quiet them. And I see you with your toddler and your preschooler. I watch you cringe when your little girl asks an innocent question in a voice that might not be an inside voice let alone a church whisper. I hear the exasperation in your voice as you beg your child to just sit, to be quiet as you feel everyone's eyes on you. Not everyone is looking, but I know it feels that way. I know you're wondering, is this worth it? Why do I bother? I know you often leave church more exhausted than fulfilled. But what you are doing is so important. When you are here, the church is filled with a joyful noise. When you are here, the Body of Christ is more fully present. When you are here, we are reminded that this worship thing we do isn't about bible study or personal, quiet contemplation but coming together to worship as a community where all are welcome, where we share in the Word and Sacrament together. When you are here, I have hope that these pews won't be empty in 10 years when your kids are old enough to sit quietly and behave in worship. I know that they are learning how and why we worship now, before it's too late. They are learning that worship is important. I see them learning. In the midst of the cries, whines, and giggles, in the midst of the crinkling of pretzel bags and the growing pile of crumbs, I see a little girl who insists on going two pews up to share peace with someone she's never met. I hear a little boy slurping (quite loudly) every last drop of his communion wine out of the cup, determined not to miss a drop of Jesus. I watch a child excitedly color a cross and point to the one in the front of the sanctuary. I hear the echoes of "Amens" just a few seconds after the rest of the community says it together. I watch a boy just learning to read try to sound out the words in the worship book or count his way to Hymn 672. Even on weeks when I can't see my own children learning because, well, it's one of those mornings, I can see your children learning. I know how hard it is to do what you're doing, but I want you to know it matters. It matters to me. It matters to my children to not be alone in the pew. It matters to the congregation to know that families care about faith, to see young people... and even on those weeks when you can't see the little moments; it matters to your children. It matters that they learn that worship is what we do as a community of faith that everyone is welcome, that their worship matters. When we teach children that their worship matters, we teach them that they are enough right here and right now as members of the church community. They don't need to wait until they can believe, pray or worship a certain way to be welcome here, and I know adults who are still looking to be shown that. It matters that children learn that they are an integral part of this church, that their prayers, their songs, and even their badly (or perfectly-timed, depending on who you ask) cries and whines are a joyful noise because it means they are present. I know it's hard, but thank you for what you do when you bring your children to church. Please know that your family -- with all of its noise, struggle, commotion, and joy -- are not simply tolerated, you are a vital part of the community gathered in worship. LEADERSHIP TEAM UPDATE UCC LEADERSHIP TEAM Update November 2014 Bond Notes: Art Moore brought us all up to date regarding the bonds. *The church has sold $17,000 of 2 year and $17,000 of 3-year bonds, paying 3% interest, to pay for the renovation in the sanctuary, removal of balcony, a new sound system, new high definition video camera and projector, and a lighting control system. *The two-year bonds will come due in August 2015 and with interest will be $18,035. *The three-year bonds will come due in August 2016 and with interest will be $18,576.39. *The Renovation Promissory Notes are in $1,000 and $5,000 denominations and the church has the right to pre-pay the bonds and accrued interest. There are several ways to pay for the bonds: fund raisers, extend the time of the notes, or use the line of credit to finish the payment. Fundraisers would be best way, if possible. It was decided to use the Harvest Festival monies for the debt retirement that was incurred from renovations (sanctuary, sound, lighting, cameras, etc.) Designated Fund: Designated funds are usually used for what they were originally intended for. However, designated funds might not always get used for what was intended as circumstances and needs change over time. The amounts that are in designated funds ($800 Library, $1,582 reserve memorial fund, $4,952 in bond account, $919 memorial funds), which would total around $8,269. The LT will continue to discuss how best to use these funds. MBC Ministry Team: Erin Carlson shared her vision about the ministry team she would like to organize “Meals, Babysitting, Cleaning” (MBC). This team would care for people in our congregation by meeting some basic needs that may arise from an extended illnesses, moving, military deployment, loss, new baby, fire, etc. Harvest Festival October 26TH: Thank you to everyone who shared his or her talent with us at the Harvest Festival! Over $6,000 was raised to pay off the renovation debt. Communication Ministry Team: We are in the process of developing a new logo, website, bulletin boards, and phone system. Josh Williamson has worked very hard at developing a new communication system to identify how best to communicate information and to get that information to individuals in a manner that is best for them (website, email, text, phone call, bulletin board, newsletter, etc.) Phone System- the LT is looking into some options other than CLT and will get some estimates before we okay moving forward on replacing/updating the phone system. Lake Beauty Kingdom Investment Sunday November 9th: Pastor attended the LBBC annual meeting where the needs of the camp were addressed. There is an addition to the dining hall planned at a projected cost of around $ 600,000. LBBC asked if supporting churches would take a special offering for this. It was expressed that if each member could give $ 75, the project could be fully funded. There is a DVD available for showing at a service. Spiritual Gifts Fair - November 2nd & 9th: Tables for specific spiritual gifts will be setup with the LT and others there to talk to individuals about how they can use their gifts to serve one another and the community. New Member Status: Ty and Tammy Linden, and Cheryl Forshier will be received as new members November 2nd. LAKE BEAUTY BIBLE CAMP Dear LBBC Member Church, The Theme verse for this past summer was: “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” Psalm 90:2. Using the theme idea of “Looking back to the future,” the idea was that in order to understand the future we need to look back at the beginning. Why we were created, who created us and what it is that God has for us to do. It was an amazing year. We have had a growing year with a new program being developed and implemented with Solid Rock. Our one-year discipleship program brought 11 students, who desire to go deeper in their walk with Jesus and take time to better discern His calling in their lives. The year includes a 13-day in country trip to the Holy Lands, taking the opportunity to bring the scriptures alive and experience life, as it would have been where Jesus walked and talked. This year was about major remodeling. We completely remodeled the Chapel upstairs and down. Added more space in the upstairs, but also remodeling the outside and new windows, doors and better AC. The basement is now the housing for our summer staff and the dorm space for Solid Rock. Many have enjoyed it and all are thankful for the new and improved spaces made available to them. We have also been remodeling the program at camp. This summer our camper attendance was up almost 150 over the previous year, which is now four years of consecutive growth. We also saw over 85 first time professions of faith and over 450 re-commitments to Jesus. These are the ones that we know about and we know that there is a celebration going on above and here on earth as well. It is a privilege to partner with you, our member churches. As we work together to Proclaim Jesus and Reflect His Love, the kingdom grows and the truth is communicated. As we move ahead to this next year we are excited about the possibility of building our new meeting space facility south of the current Dining Hall. This space is greatly needed for our continued growth and sustainability. We have groups wanting to come and use the facilities at LBBC however we do not have the space to offer them for meeting and so they can’t come. We are planning to raise $600,000.00 and be able to break ground first thing this spring. We are asking the churches to hold November 9th, 2014 as “Kingdom Investment Sunday.” We have produced a 5-minute DVD we are trusting that the churches will show to help raise the awareness of this need at the camp. We thank you for the continued support. We have recently hit the $1,000,000.00 mark with updates and improvements that have been made at the camp. These are from cash gifts and gifts in kind, with that we have updated almost all of our buildings, improved the heating, lighting and the utility infrastructure at the camp. THANK YOU. Because of you we have been able to do all of these projects with cash in hand. We have also kept the camp in the black for the past 8 years as we have built.
