Physical Education Lesson Teacher: Iris Torgunrud Activity: Pathways Date: November 18, 2009 Grade: Kindergarten Activity Purpose: - To have children moving in different pathways and have the understanding that pathways involve different forms of changing or not changing directions - To have children moving in different locomotions along different pathways - To have children understand the difference between a zig-zag, a curved and a straight pathway Possible Learnings: - Directions (left, right, straight) - Pathways can consist of different types of paths (curved, zig-zag and straight) - Body and space awareness - Different characters move in different ways CEL’s: - Personal and Social Values and Skills (respecting other’s space) - Critical and Creative thinking (moving like different animals) Equipment / materials: - Painters tape for floor pathways - Freeze Drum - Pathway cards (visuals—zig-zag, curved and straight for the beginning of each pathway) - Light cards for the floor Advanced Preparation: - Have different pathways taped onto the floor - Have pathway cards created (zig-zag, curved and straight) - Have teacher’s pathway card created Adaptive Dimension: - Each portion of the lesson can be shortened or lengthened, depending upon skill and success rate - Instead of using multiple locomotions, just walking could be used if students are struggling to stay on the path and not run into each other. - If students are grasping the concepts quickly, I will add different directions to their instructions (move backwards, sideways) 1 Set: (up to 4 minutes) - What does this look like? (1) - Discuss the differences between zig-zag, curved and straight pathways using flash cards - Which has no turns? Sharp turns? Round turns? - Review “Freeze Drum” - Walk down the hallway to the gym - Hold up three pathway cards and ask which type we took to get to the gym - Model different pathways - (Don’t worry about the tape) Have students move in each type of pathway—curved, zig-zag and straight— around the gym once and meet in the center Development: (15-20 minutes) Task 1: (5 minutes) - Draw attention to the pathways taped on the floor (see attached sheet) Show with your hands what the pathways look like - How many of each? - Model finding a space on a pathway, walking along the pathway, and, walking back to the green “start” circle of the same path - Have students do the same - WALKING – on the same path then sit down after 2 times Classroom Management Strategies: - The Freeze Drum is a consistent classroom management tool which the students have seen before, and will respond to as before - Ask what their normal routines are for coming into the gymnasium - Introduce students to lights - Green start circle, yellow as they go through, red when they get to the end. (keep speed down) - Have students switch to a NEW pathway and walk along that one (alone) - Now have students move in different locomotions on their pathway (hoping, skipping, leaping, slithering, sliding, tip-toeing) - Ask for other suggestions - Think about different levels Task two: (10 minutes) - Once again, move to a new pathway. - Do we use pathways like this when we are walking to school, or on the play ground, or in our house? - Do you think animals would move on pathways like we just did? - Talk about animals, and how some animals might move. Have students try to move like an animal they chose. - What kind of animal do you want to move like? (GIVE EVERYONE A CHANCE IF THEY WANT) - Have one child demonstrate and then everyone try. - Kangaroo? What about a mouse? And Elephant? (Hop, low to the ground, very wide and heavy - Ask all students for an example (if they want to share) 2 **if extra time allows** Task 3 (4 minutes) - Talk about the lines on the floor (what are they for?) - Look at some of the lines… where do they go? - Find a place to start, and make a pathway to another part of the gymnasium. - Think of the different ways we moved today. Sometimes we were very low to the ground, and sometimes we were very quiet on our feet. - Travel back on a different path. Closure: (4 minutes) - What three kinds of pathways did we talk about today? (curved, z-z & straight) - Who can tell me one special point about a z-z pathway? - Have one student demonstrate a z-z path. - Who can tell me one special point about a curved pathway? - Have one student demo. a curved path. - Who can tell me one special point about a straight pathway? - Have one student demo. a straight path. 3 Professional Development Plan Topic P.E. Pathways Date November 18 Teacher Iris Torgunrud Observer _________________ 1. Professional Target 2. Steps to Achieve Target To give clear directions as well as modelling what I with the students to do so all students understand what they are to do. I will give only one or two directions at a time. I will model what I would like my students to do, and have one or two students model the direction. I will check for understanding by asking students to repeat my directions. 3. Instructions for Observer: (Be Specific) - Are the directions I am giving clear? Am I giving too many or too few directions at a time? Please make note of the directions students are understanding and following well, and make note of the directions students are not understanding or following. 4. Data Collection: a) Clarity of directions: b) Directions students follow: c) Directions students not following: 4 5
